New fan art has emerged imagining actor Armie Hammer as DC superhero icon Shazam! While Hammer first gained notices as a guest star on the CW's series Gossip Girl, his star in feature films has been steadily on the rise since his breakthrough dual performance of the Winklevoss twins in director David Fincher's Oscar-nominated Facebook drama The Social Network. Hammer's adventures since included a trot into Disney film territory by playing the titular role in Disney's The Lone Ranger opposite Johnny Depp's Tonto; and most recently he starred opposite future Captain Marvel star Brie Larson in the shoot 'em up Free Fire. In June, Hammer is hitching a ride with Disney/Pixar's Cars 3, where the actor voices the chief competitor Jackson Storm to Owen Wilson's Lightning McQueen.
A standout in Hollywood thanks to his imposing frame and chiseled looks, Hammer has often been mentioned as a candidate to play Green Lantern in the DCEU, but a suggestion this week from future Black Adam star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (albeit not by name, but referring to The Lone Ranger) suddenly has fans picturing Hammer as famed DC superhero Shazam! Quickly following Johnson's revelation, prolific graphic artist BossLogic whipped up fan art of Hammer in in the guise of Shazam for Comic Book. Surrounded by clouds and lightning bolts, Hammer appears to be a perfect fit for Shazam's costume in BossLogic's new rendering:
Of course, this isn't the first time Hammer has been the subject of one of Boss Logic's stunning pieces. In March, the artist imagined Hammer in a Justice League Green Lantern character poster. And while Hammer looks equally as impressive in Boss Logic's vision of Shazam, a lot has to happen before Hammer lands either role. True, he has the physical presence and charisma needed for either Hal Jordan/Green Lantern or Billy Batson/Shazam, but he has yet to prove that he can carry a film as a lead. Despite impressive co-stars like Henry Cavill in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Depp in The Lone Ranger, both films were disappointments as the box office (though, U.N.C.L.E. has a sequel in development), so Warner Bros. may be a bit shy yet to cast him in the lead of a franchise film.
Coming from the biggest box office star in the world at the moment, Johnson's endorsement is no doubt a boost for Hammer, but whether those words translate into an actual casting of the actor in the coveted role is yet to be seen. Hammer seems destined to join the DCEU somehow, so perhaps a supporting appearance in Justice League 2 may be his ticket in for an eventual showdown with Johnson as Black Adam.
