The biggest mysteries plaguing DC’s prime Earth, are centering around three surprising heroes Shazam, Aquaman, and Green Lantern. As DC’s Infinite Frontier has fundamentally changed the nature of the DC Multiverse’s continuities, many characters are facing new threats and exploring new facets of themselves. While readers already have some insight as to what major changes are coming through the Future State series of comics, a lot of mystery still lingers as the road to the new morally gray future remains hidden.

At the end of several issues across multiple DC series (i.e. Superman and the Authority #1 and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #2) readers can find two pages depicting Mr. Bones, Director of the Department of Extranormal Operations (DEO), in his office looking at a tablet with six questions displayed on the screen. While these questions are often not directly related to the issue at hand, they cover the breadth of the DC Universe and how it has begun to change following its latest reboot. The questions are: 1. Is the United Planets Forming their own Justice League? 2. What sacrifice must Shazam! make? 3. Why have the Green Lanterns’ rings gone dark? 4. What is the new Swamp Things’ mission? 5. Who will protect the oceans? 6. Why has Red X infiltrated the Teen Titans Academy?

A few of these questions have already been answered as various DC series continue to advance. Yes, the United Planets is assembling a team of super-powered beings, the United Order. The Green Lanterns’ rings are dark because their central power battery has been destroyed, and Red X has infiltrated the TTA to scout for talent. These answers are compelling, but the unanswered question regarding Shazam and the oceans prove especially elusive, and following up on why the Green Lanterns’ power battery was destroyed holds key insight as to why the galactic peacekeeping corps fell apart as spectacularly as they did by the time Future State rolls around.

Future State poses huge changes to DC as heroes retire and pass the torch on to the younger generation, while other aspects of the DC universe drastically change. In Shazam’s case, the changes are profound even by the future’s standards. The power of Shazam has left Billy Batson in the future, and turned into a dark version of the character protecting the Rock of Eternity. While the reason why is still unknown, readers can already see this starting to play out, as Billy Batson begins struggling with his powers in Shazam! #1 yet most of the details regarding what’s happening to Shazam remain undisclosed. Likewise, on the matter of the oceans, the fate of Earth’s seas appears to be up in the air as Aquaman has stepped down from the throne, and continually denies being the king of Atlantis anymore as tensions between Atlantis and the U.S. soar. Perhaps Aqualad will rise to the occasion and attempt to mediate the dispute between the surface dwellers and the Atlanteans like his former mentor did? Lastly, readers know that the Green Lantern’s central power battery has been destroyed but the who and why are still shrouded in mystery. Needless to say, the Green Lanterns being removed from the larger galactic stage is a huge development for the universe, and for Earth particularly as it loses some of its most capable defenders in the future.

Infinite Frontier has proven to be a drastic shake-up for the DC universe as characters drastically change by reconnecting with old aspects of themselves and defining new ones. The Universe’s greatest mysteries since being reformed from the ashes of Death Metal, though, are closely tied to Shazam, Aquaman, and the Green Lanterns.
