A set photo for Shazam: Fury of the Gods reveals the return of Djimon Hounsou's Wizard. In the 2019 Shazam, the Wizard was the last surviving member of the Council of Wizards. After spending years searching for a worthy champion to take his powers, he bestowed them upon Billy Batson (Asher Angel), who soon realized he could turn into an adult hero (Zachary Levi) whenever he said the Wizard's name: Shazam. The Wizard disappeared after giving these abilities to Billy, but the reports of his death may have been greatly exaggerated.

For months now, production has been underway on Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Once again directed by David F. Sandberg, the sequel will follow Billy and his superpowered foster siblings as they face new threats. Those threats are so far demigoddesses Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and Hespera (Helen Mirren)West Side Story breakout Rachel Zegler also has a role in Shazam 2, which is set to debut in June 2023. With so long to go before the movie arrives, fans have been relying on set photos to provide major updates.

The latest peek at Shazam 2 arrives courtesy of Atlanta Filming. Over the weekend, the account confirmed Hounsou will once again appear in the film as the original Shazam by sharing a picture of the actor on set. No further details about his scene were given, but the updated hairstyle for the Wizard indicates this could be a flashback of some sort. Check out the post down below.

As Shazam 2 will see Billy and his siblings facing actual godly figures, it seems likely that there could be some flashbacks to Hespera and Kalypso's origins. Perhaps they have a connection to the Wizard and the Council, which would explain why Hounsou doesn't look as ancient in the above photo. His role in Shazam 2 can help deepen the overall mythology of the series and, if it does have to do with Hespera and Kalypso, give more shades to the two main villains.

This is all speculation for the time being, as little is known about Shazam 2's plot so far. Still, this makes Hounsou one of the many returning faces from the first movie; much of the Shazam family (as in, both the adults and children) are back for the sequel. The only person sitting out Shazam 2 is Michelle Borth, since Grace Fulton will be playing both roles for her character Mary Bromfield. As for the Wizard, fans will have to stay tuned to find out what brings him back to the DCEU for this installment.
