Shazam: Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg playfully trolls fans over questions about Rachel Zegler's mystery role. Sandberg's first foray into the DCEU, 2019's Shazam, brought a burst of colorful, childlike wonder to the typically darker franchise as it introduced young hero Billy Batson (Asher Angel as a teen, Zachary Levi as an adult). Greeted with positive reviews and a solid $363.6 million worldwide total, Shazam was a success for the franchise. A sequel was announced to be in the works right as it opened, and after multiple schedule changes, it is currently slated to premiere in June 2023.
Little is known about the plot for Shazam: Fury of the Gods, save for that it will find Billy and his foster siblings continuously adjusting to their newfound powers. As the title suggests, they'll end up facing some godly opponents in this one, The two main villains be played by impressive actresses: Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. Additionally, West Side Story star Rachel Zegler has a role in Shazam 2, but aside from the fact that she's reportedly the sister of Mirren and Liu's characters, little is known about who she is playing.
Sandberg isn't providing any answers either. During a Q&A session on his Instagram, Sandberg fielded a question regarding Zegler's Shazam 2 role. "Who is Rachel Zegler playing?" a fan asked. Sandberg replied by attaching a picture of Snow White. Zegler was cast as Disney's Snow White back in June, so technically, he isn't lying.
Zegler is about to break out in a major way thanks to her role as Maria in Steven Spielberg's West Side Story. By adding Snow White and Shazam 2 to her growing filmography, Zegler is further cementing her status as a rising star. Because of that, there's a lot of interest in her Fury of the Gods character, but for some reason, she's being kept a mystery. Mirren and Liu are already confirmed to be playing Hespera and Kalypso, respectively, so one has to wonder why Zegler's name hasn't even been revealed.
Thanks to a recent Shazam 2 trailer, it's at least been confirmed that Zegler will form a connection with Jack Dylan Grazer's Freddy Freeman. Set photos hinted at a romantic spark between the two, and it looks like that will be her introduction to Billy and his siblings. Whether Zegler is an ally or will later betray them to align with her sisters remains to be seen, but as Shazam: Fury of the Gods slowly gets closer, expect more details about her to finally emerge.
