Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg shares a bizarre and hilarious post that pokes fun at Helen Mirren's casting in the upcoming DCEU movie. The hotly anticipated sequel to 2019's Shazam! has been the subject of a number of delays and date changes due to the ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially scheduled for release in 2023, the Shazam 2 release date was recently brought forward to December 15, 2022. Sandberg returned for the sequel, which also sees a number of Shazam's principle cast reprise their roles, including Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, and Jack Dylan Grazer.

Both Levi and Angel star as the film's titular character, with Angel playing young Billy Batson and Levi playing his super-powered counterpart. With only a number of small teases for Shazam! Fury of the Gods having been released so far, much of what can be expected from this exciting DCEU installment remains a mystery. Perhaps the most exciting news to come out of this film so far was confirmation that Lucy Liu and Mirren would make their DC debuts as the daughters of Atlas, Kalypso and Hespera, respectively.

Now, Sandberg shares a rather strange post to Instagram which provides some 'context' to Mirren's casting. The hilarious series of roughly drawn comic panels are titled "Totally True Tales from Shazam 2," in which he details a strange story about how Mirren supposedly came to accept her role in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The director jokes about his discovery of Mirren's "career hair," to which she elaborated that it was somewhat of a lucky charm of hers that started growing at the beginning of her career. The posts culminated with the bizarre revelation that Mirren decided to join the Shazam sequel because of said hair, before she then rolled away on a hoverboard. The director's joke immediately spawned a number of confused comments, with many praising Sandberg's unique sense of humor. Check out the post below:

Sandberg is no stranger to social media, often taking to Instagram to share fun updates from Shazam! Fury of the Gods' production, as well as various other hilarious posts. While both Mirren and Liu are expected to be the key Shazam 2 villains, their roles are still largely shrouded in secrecy. West Side Story star Rachel Zegler is also set to appear in the film, with Mirren having previously let slip the young star's exact role, confirming suspicions that she was in fact the third sister of both Kalypso and Hespera.

While Sandberg's post was created in jest, it's amusing to imagine Mirren actually selecting her roles based on such a strange stipulation. Just what exactly inspired Sandberg to share such a bizarre post remains to be seen, but the director's appreciation for Mirren's talent is evident, as the post pokes fun at the Hollywood star's involvement with the Shazam sequel. In the meantime, with a Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer still a short while away, fans will likely be eagerly awaiting another "totally true tale" from Sandberg.
