The Shazam family will have a bigger role in Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Warner Bros. and DC Films were criticized often during the early days of the DC Extended Universe for having dark movies, but Shazam! couldn't be further from that. The 2019 film had a light-hearted, comedic tone to match its story of a teenager transforming into a grown superhero at will. However, Billy Batson wasn't the only kid to get superpowers in the movie, as the end of Shazam saw the origin of the Shazam family.

Shazam and his newly superpowered foster siblings are scheduled to return for a sequel, which recently unveiled its title, Shazam: Fury of the Gods. Details on what the next film will hold have otherwise been difficult to come by, as those involved aren't rushing to share too much about a movie that won't come out until 2022. But, that hasn't stopped fans from wanting to know more, especially in regards to what the Shazam family's role could be.

During DC FanDome (via Comicbook), the cast and crew of Shazam! participated in a fan Q&A, and one question directed at director David F. Sandberg helped provide some answers. The question asked Sandberg if the Shazam family will be more involved in Shazam 2 and his response was, "Definitely." He didn't reveal the specifics of their role in the sequel but did tease that their increased screentime should excite fans.

Now they're all superheroes, they're all a family with superpowers. And now we finally get to see that. We only got a glimpse of that in the first movie, so that's something to look forward to.

Billy Batson and his family with powers in Shazam

The return of the Shazam family in Shazam 2 should mean that the adult actors who played those parts should all be back. The first film saw Michelle Borth play Mary Bromfield, Meagan Good play Darla Dudley, Ross Butler play Eugene Choi, Adam Brody play Freddy Freeman, and D.J. Cotrona play Pedro Peña. In the comics, Mary and Freddy are the two most prominent members of the Shazam family and could similarly have larger roles than the rest in the sequel.

Now that it is confirmed the Shazam family will be back in Shazam 2 in a bigger capacity, fans should get excited over the possibilities this gives the film. Instead of having one hero at the forefront of its story, Shazam 2 will have at least five powered people to use throughout. They so far only have been used in an action set piece, so the sequel can explore how each of the kids acts differently after experiencing this power. Billy already learned this lesson during the first movie, but now the powers can be used to aid character development for the rest of the Shazam family. And of course, hopefully this also means Shazam: Fury of the Gods will include more big team-ups between them all.
