David F. Sandberg has released a Shazam 2 teaser trailer which uses quotes from reviews for the movie, even though it hasn't shot a frame yet. Sandberg directed the first Shazam! and will also helm the as-yet-untitled sequel, scheduled to be released in 2022. The first movie was something of a surprise hit for DC, who had suffered a string of box office failures, most notably Justice League. However, Shazam! had a lighter tone and a less dense story which appealed to fans, and ended up making almost four times its budget back at the box office.

Shazam! starred Zachary Levi as the titular superhero, who is the alter ego of teenage orphan Billy Batson (Asher Angel). Mark Strong appeared in movie as villain Dr. Sivana, and Jack Dylan Grazer played Batson's foster brother Freddy Freeman. The movie set up an intriguing sequel by establishing Batson's foster brothers and sisters as superheroes during the climactic battle, as well as establishing the character in the DC Extended Universe by having a Superman cameo in the mid-credits scene. Unfortunately, the sequel's production timeline was affected by the coronavirus pandemic, but Sandberg is still having fun with viewers.

Now, Sandberg has dropped a surprise teaser trailer for Shazam 2, which features footage from Shazam! with reviews from Shazam 2 overlaid. The only problem, as Sandberg says, is that they haven't shot it yet, so the reviews are all fake ones, talking about anticipation of the movie and random quotes saying "I'm fine with this" and "David F. Sandberg is a sweetheart", as well as one about how old the reviewer will be when the movie finally hits theaters. You can watch the teaser below.

An interesting detail from the teaser is that the title Sandberg uses is Shazam!!, as opposed to Shazam 2. While this is not confirmation, it does make one speculate that the sequel might just add an extra exclamation point to the title rather than adding a sub-title in the style of so many other superhero movies. The Swedish director doesn't use that term in his caption either, preferring Shazam 2, but perhaps this could be a sneaky reveal of the sequel's title.

Whatever it ends up being called, it's likely that the real marketing for Shazam 2 will feature quotes from actual reviewers rather than fans who are commenting online about the movie a full two years ahead of its release. The trailer is a reminder that Sandberg's dry Scandinavian sense of humor is perfectly suited to the character, and one of the main reasons for the movie's success. There aren't many other directors that would cut together a teaser trailer for their upcoming big-budget superhero sequel and slap some fake review quotes on it. With Sandberg set to appear at DC FanDome next weekend, hopefully there will be actual news concerning Shazam 2 and how it's coming together.
