The Shazam! Fury of the Gods BTS trailer is released revealing the first footage from the DC movie. The sequel to 2019's Shazam! was put into development not too long after the first film's release, with the main cast expected to return. Asher Angel returns as Billy Batson, and Zachary Levi as his superhero alter-ego Shazam, with director David F. Sandberg back at the helm. Additionally returning are the members of Billy's foster family: Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Faithe Herman as Darla, Grace Fulton as Mary, Ian Chen as Eugene and Jovan Armand as Pedro. Their superhero alter-egos are played by Adam Brody, Meagan Goode, Fulton, Russ Butler and D.J. Cotrona, respectively.
At DC FanDome 2020, the sequel's title Shazam! Fury of the Gods was announced, along with the release of a fake teaser poster that included Sinbad as part of a longer joke. New cast members were also added to the sequel, including Helen Mirren as the daughter of Atlas Hespera, Lucy Liu as fellow daughter of Atlas Kalypso and Rachel Zegler as a mysterious character. Filming on Shazam! Fury of the Gods took place earlier in 2021, though it's not set to be released until June 2023. Now, the cast brings some exciting reveals to DC FanDome 2021.
During DC FanDome 2021, the Shazam! Fury of the Gods BTS trailer was released, check it out in the video below. The Shazam 2 behind-the-scenes footage shows quite a few looks at all the superhero costumes for Billy Batson and his foster family, as well as some intriguing bits from filming - including Darla riding on the back of a creature that will no doubt be added in with CGI. Further, the footage reveals a first look at Hespera and Kalypso and their storyline seems to be tied to the ancient looking sword that appears throughout the trailer. Beyond that, the Shazam! Fury of the Gods BTS trailer also showcases concept art for new locations, CGI models for mythological creatures like dragons and plenty of action set pieces.
The villains are the biggest reveal of the Shazam 2 movie footage, with Mirren and Liu's costumes being revealed and their storyline teased. The teaser also reveals some insight into Zegler's character. Although Shazam 2 set photos revealed Zegler kissing Freddy Freeman, indicating she'll be introduced as his love interest in the sequel, her role in the story has been kept under wraps. However, the footage reveals she will be involved in an altercation between Freddy and Hespera and Kalypso where she appears to be standing behind Hespera while Mirren's character draws Freddy to her. Another quick shot later in the footage shows Zegler in a gold Grecian costume that's vaguely similar to Hespera and Kalypso's outfits - though it's a brighter gold, which may mean she becomes or is forced to be a new ally of the villains. How exactly she fits in remains to be seen but it does appear she's connected to the villains somehow.
Beyond the villains, the Shazam! Fury of the Gods concept art teases new mythological creatures like harpies and dragons - one of which is what Darla's presumably riding - as well as new locations. The kids are still living in Philadelphia and they'll return to the Rock of Eternity, but they'll also visit Athens, the Library of Eternity and the "realm of the gods." The concept art for the realm of the gods is especially interesting since it showcases three figures who seem to be wearing costumes similar to Hespera and Kalypso, while the footage of Mirren showed her behind bars, which may mean she and Liu's characters have been imprisoned there but breakout or are set free. In addition to that, the Shazam 2 footage shows off the heroes' lair, which appears to be a redecorated Rock of Eternity tricked out with things kids would like. While these bits and teases are exciting, more from the film will be revealed when the full Shazam! Fury of the Gods trailer is released - likely sometime next year.
