Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Asher Angel celebrates filming wrap with a behind-the-scenes image of him and Zachary Levi. Director David F. Sandberg’s DC Extended Universe film sees the return of Asher’s Billy Batson and his titular, super-powered alter ego played by Levi. In 2019’s Shazam, Billy is chosen by an ancient wizard (Djimon Hounsou) to transform with the single utterance of ‘Shazam!’ At the end of that first film, Billy’s foster siblings all receive powers and become adult superheroes with the powers of the gods, forming the Shazam family.

While plot details are being kept under wraps, the sequel will see Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer), Eugene (Ian Chen), Pedro (Jovan Armand), Darla (Faithe Herman), and Mary (Grace Fulton) all reprise their roles with Adam Brody, D.J. Cotrona, Ross Butler, and Meagan Good also returning as the adult versions of these characters. It was also announced that Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu will play Hespera and Kalypso, the daughters of Atlas, and West Side Story breakout Rachel Zegler joined the cast in an unknown role. Over the weekend, Sandberg took to Twitter responding to a claim that the sequel had wrapped filming, saying the film is “almost to the finish line” but has not finished production.

Prior to Sandberg’s comments, Angel shared a photo of him and Levi to Instagram, celebrating the wrapping of his work on the film. It would appear the initial confusion online came from Angel’s post. Check it out below:

Following a series of coronavirus-related delays, Shazam! Fury of the Gods began filming in May, with a scheduled theatrical release date of June 2, 2023. Many of the film’s cast have taken to social media to announce they have wrapped filming, and it’s likely the official wrap of filming will come this week as the sequel enters post-production. That said, the Delta variant puts some of the Warner Bros./DC Film’s most anticipated projects at risk of being postponed yet again.

Upcoming DC titles include The BatmanBlack Adam, The Flash, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which are all slated for 2022 releases. While the DCEU isn’t necessarily known for its continuity, compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, if Black Adam is connected to Shazam! Fury of the Gods in any way, its delay could push the latter. There hasn't been any word of the sequel being delayed as of yet, and everything seems to be going according to plan as production appears to be coming along nicely.
