Shaun befriends an alien - one with "magical" powers and burps that resonate around the earth - in the trailer for Shaun the Sheep Movie 2: Farmageddon. Also known as A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon, the upcoming film is a sequel to Aardman Animations' acclaimed 2015 hit, Shaun the Sheep Movie. Both films are based on the stop-motion animated TV show Shaun the Sheep, which follows the misadventures of the eponymous mischief-loving sheep (first introduced in the Wallace & Gromit short, "A Clove Shave").
In the sequel Farmageddon, Shaun encounters LU-LA, a tiny alien with a knack for causing big trouble, thanks to her out-of-this-world unusual abilities and similarly "galactic sized" burps. Shaun quickly takes to his newfound companion, and the pair team up to find LU-LA's lost spaceship, which crash-landed somewhere on the road to Mossingham Forest. Before long, however, the two discover that a secretive alien-hunting organization is hot on their trail and determined to capture LU-LA for their own nefarious purposes. Thankfully, that's easier said than done, as the film's trailer demonstrates.

Much like the teaser trailer, the official promo for Shaun the Sheep Movie 2 has all the clever sight gags and slapstick comedy that fans have come to expect from the franchise. Aardman itself is coming off a rare disappointment with last year's prehistoric comedy Early Man. The film earned decent but on the whole lukewarm reviews, and only grossed $54 million at the worldwide box office on a $50 million budget. Fortunately, they should bounce back both creatively and commercially with their Shaun the Sheep sequel, if the quality of the trailers is any indicator. No doubt, Farmageddon benefitted from having seasoned Aardman veterans Richard Phelan (one of the storyboard artists on Shaun the Sheep Movie) and Will Bechler (who also worked on the Shaun the Sheep TV show) calling the shots.
That said, U.S. audiences may have a bit of a wait until the film hits theaters. The Shaun the Sheep sequel is scheduled to open in the UK this fall, but doesn't have a domestic launch date just yet. American stop-motion features aren't too common these days (save for Laika's films, like this month's Missing Link), so fans of the art form don't have a whole lot to keep them preoccupied in-between Aardman releases. The sequel will begin its global rollout near the end of September, so it may yet arrive stateside before the end of the year (or, at the very least, in early 2020).
A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon opens in the UK this fall on Friday, October 18.
