The second trailer for A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon teases the next installment in Aardman Animations' irreverent stop-motion franchise. In the twenty-odd years since Aardman started making feature films, the studio has been applauded for sticking with their old-fashioned claymation aesthetic in a time when computer animation has become the norm (though Aardman has tried their hand at digital animation on a couple of projects by this point). And while they tend to stick to one-off productions, they've developed quite the successful franchise around Shaun the Sheep and his fellow Mossy Bottom Farm denizens.
Out of all the Aardman properties to date, Shaun the Sheep arguably lends itself the most to multiple films. The wooly title character was born out of the Wallace & Gromit shorts and managed to sustain an entire TV series with his silly antics and nearly silent comedy shenanigans before making the jump to the big screen in 2015. And in addition to having a delightfully pun-y title, the upcoming sequel A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmagedddon strives to up the ante by incorporating cheeky homages to sci-fi classics like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., and Men in Black into the mix.
The film's new trailer doubles down on that by including a variety of gags that poke fun at modern technology and workplace culture (much in the same way that the first Shaun the Sheep Movie did), while still finding room for more kid-friendly jokes involving burping aliens and how even non-earthling infants have a distaste for broccoli. Take a look at the second trailer and latest synopsis for A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon in the space below.
Get ready for a close encounter of the furred kind. Watch the brand new trailer for A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon featuring the new track 'LAZY' by The Vaccines and Kylie Minogue. Shaun the Sheep’s highly anticipated return to the big screen will herald the arrival of a mystery visitor from far across the galaxy... an impish and adorable alien called LU-LA who crash-lands near Mossy Bottom Farm, Shaun soon sees an opportunity for alien-powered fun and adventure as he sets off on a mission to shepherd LU-LA home. Her magical alien powers, irrepressible mischief and galactic sized burps - showcased in today’s trailer - soon have the flock enchanted. Can Shaun and the flock avert Farmageddon on Mossy Bottom Farm before it’s too late?
Aardman has already announced plans for another sequel - Chicken Run 2, a long awaited continuation of their first feature and biggest box office success so far - to follow A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon. The studio's last movie, Early Man, earned an uncharacteristically indifferent critical response on its way to becoming their lowest grossing feature, so it makes sense for them to revisit a few of their most beloved properties while they recover their footing.
The first Shaun the Sheep Movie was a modest performer domestically, but more than tripled its budget across the pond. That might explain why the film has yet to set a U.S. release date, ahead of its international rollout beginning this fall. Rest assured, though, A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon will eventually make its way to our side of the pond.
