Syfy has released a time-traveling first teaser for its upcoming b-movie sequel Sharknado 6, which reveals the film's full title. It's been a long, strange half-decade trip for the Sharknado series, which unexpectedly managed to ride its crazy premise to social media stardom, and high ratings to boot. For the first few sequels, attention on the franchise just kept growing, as the situations got increasingly wackier, and the celebrity cameos got more frequent.
By last year's Sharknado 5: Global Swarming though, it was becoming pretty clear that the Sharknado series had just about run its course. While its viewership and social media buzz were far from abysmal, they were also far from the heights once enjoyed by the franchise that managed to at least somewhat rejuvenate the careers of then mostly forgotten 90s stars Ian Ziering and Tara Reid. Before playing heroic shark-battler Fin Shepherd, Ziering was of course best known for his days as Steve Sanders on Beverly Hills, 90210. Reid - who plays Fin's love interest April - is still probably best remembered for playing Vicky in the American Pie movies.
A couple months back, Syfy let it be known that Sharknado 6 will be the end of the franchise, and mark the conclusion of Fin's recurring encounters with shark-related weather phenomena. At the time, the film's reported premiere date was Wednesday, July 25. Now, Syfy has released the first teaser for Sharknado 6, revealing the sequel's full title as The Last Sharknado: It's About Time. Also revealed is a slightly later premiere date of Sunday, August 19.
The Last Sharknado: It's About Time is a title that works on more than one level. Obviously, this is indeed The Last Sharknado, so no false advertising there. The subtitle though is a two-pronged reference, the first being that Sharknado 6 will see Fin travel through time in an attempt to undo all the damage that was done in Sharknado 5 by trying to stop the very first Sharknado from happening. Secondly, it's easy to interpret It's About Time as being a lighthearted dig at the series itself, as Sharknado's detractors have often criticized the lifespan of the property.
As with the rest of the Sharknado movies, It's About Time is being directed by Anthony C. Ferrante, who is seemingly happy to be known as the Sharknado guy. To be fair though, it's steady work, in an industry sometimes prone to chewing people up and spitting them out. A few confirmed celebrity cameos for Sharknado 6 so far include Ziering's former 90210 colleague Tori Spelling, Twister Sister frontman Dee Snider, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Saturday Night Live veteran Darrell Hammond.
The Last Sharknado: It's About Time bites into TV screens on August 19.
