Sharknado 5 Gets an August Premiere Date

Sharknado 4 - Tara Reid and Ian Ziering

Sharknado 5 looms ever closer, as SyFy and NBCUniversal confirm a late summer premiere date for the next installment in the camp-horror franchise. Fans of the original Sharknado TV movie - which saw its debut only a few years ago in 2013 - was an immediate success with casual viewers and launched director Anthony C. Ferrante into the limelight of bad movie superstardom. Bearing an ethos and production value comparable to such contemporary B-movie disasterpieces as  Troll 2 and The Room, Ferrante and company soon drew plenty of eyes to a whole slew of original SyFy productions.

Following recent news that has the cast firmly in place as production begins on the tentatively titled Sharknado 5, fans of the SyFy series have a lot to look forward to when series actors Ian Ziering and Tara Reid make a return to the small screen as co-protagonists Fin Shepard and April Wexler. Based on the success of the previous Sharknado movies in terms of ratings, Ferrante and company are angling for another big late summer release when Sharknado 5 storms its way into living rooms across the country in a few months time.

According to The Wrap, a premiere date for Sharknado 5 has been officially set in stone on the joint behalf of NBCUniversal and SyFy, with the fifth film in the series from returning director Ferrante all set to air on Sunday, August 6, at 8pm EST. Little else has been revealed about the new movie - most notably an appropriately cheesy official title - but the running synopsis for the new movie reads as follows:

The pop culture phenomenon Sharknado blows into town this summer…and this time, the shark-infested storms pick up wind as the world braces for the inevitable – a global shark takeover. Will our chainsaw-wielding hero Fin Shepard (Ian Ziering) and partner in crime April Wexler (Tara Reid) save the world from this jaw snapping-nado…again?

Fans of the Sharknado phenomenon can likely expect plenty more bizarre cameos the fifth time around, considering the fact that past entries in the series have seen fit to include celebrity appearences from the likes of everyone under the sun. In no short order, Mark Cuban, Jerry Springer, Anne Coulter, Frankie Muniz, Gary Busey, Cheryl Tiegs, Steve Guttenberg, and many more have already lent their talents and personalities to the franchise, and viewers can likely expect even more when Sharknado 5 makes landfall.

Taking the eponymous epidemic to an international level will likely result in further shenanigans and craziness for the husband and wife duo of Fin and April to get up to next, and anyone who has kept up with the four prior entires will probably come along for the ride. With no end in sight to the wildly successful SyFy property, brace yourselves for the coming onslaught that is Sharknado 5.

Sharknado 5 premieres on the SyFy channel on Sunday, April 6, at 8pm EST.
