An iPhone owner can share website and app logins with a friend or family member, and Apple makes this feature as painless as possible. Having to laboriously read letters one at a time, with capitalization, numbers and symbols mixed in to spell out complicated passwords, is no fun. Of course, the same process might be required of difficult user names, and any mistake means the whole process has to start all over, which can make sharing logins torturous. Thankfully, Apple has a better way, and it works with an iPhone, iPad and Mac computer.

Passwords are a necessary evil that comes with advanced technology and the proliferation of internet conveniences. Inventing and managing new passwords almost didn't seem worth the effort in the early days, but it is getting better. Apple builds password management into the iPhone, and users can easily share that keychain of logins among various devices that are logged in with the same Apple ID via iCloud. When iPhone owners switch to their iPad or Mac, their user names and passwords travel with them. On devices that have Face ID or Touch ID, it's easy to log in to any website or app with a glance or a touch to authenticate as the owner of that Apple ID, and the login is filled in automatically.

While it might be easy to log in on devices that share an Apple ID, a friend or family member that owns an iPhone, iPad or Mac can't access that information. Even with Family Sharing switched on, members can't use other family members' passwords. Password security is essential, and logins should only be accessible when permission is given. A relatively new feature that Apple gave the iPhone makes this possible. After opening the Settings app, the device owner can tap the Passwords tab to open a list of all website and app credentials. Scrolling down through the alphabetical list or using the search field at the top, it's easy to find the correct login. The user should tap the login, then hit the Share icon at the top-right, and choose the recipient in the AirDrop list.

Clearly, users must find the login before it can be shared. If there is any trouble locating it, check under different website names. Sometimes a website uses another domain name for authentication, but it's usually somewhat close to the original name. When in doubt, go to that account and then to the login page. Tapping the Safari address bar will reveal the domain name used for logging into this website. Another problem that can occur is not seeing the person that is meant to receive the password in the AirDrop list.

If AirDrop isn't working, make sure both devices have Bluetooth enabled and AirDrop set to 'Everyone.' It can be returned to 'Contacts Only or Receiving Off' afterward if that is the preferred setting. Choosing Everyone simplifies troubleshooting efforts. Once these settings have been updated, another try should prove to be easier overall than calling out letters, numbers and symbols. iPhone password sharing is a much quicker and more secure way to provide a friend or family member with access to an app or website account login.
