Simu Liu, star of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, shared a pronunciation guide for his Marvel superhero's name. Marvel just unveiled a momentous trailer that provides a look first some of their upcoming Phase 4 films, including Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and the first look at Eternals. The trailer also revealed titles for a Black Panther sequel (Wakanda Forever), a Captain Marvel sequel (The Marvels), and announced release dates for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Though Shang-Chi already had a release date and a trailer, it will be a consequential film for Marvel as it will be their second to release in theaters following Black Widow after taking the entirety of 2020 off due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Shang-Chi will also be Marvel's first blockbuster to star a predominantly Asian cast, including Simi Liu as Marvel's Master of Kung Fu, Awkwafina as his sidekick Katy, and Tony Leung as Wenwu, Shang-Chi's father and the film's primary villain. Indie darling Destin Daniel Cretton will take the reins as director.

Though Simu Liu previously explained how to pronounce his name after a presenter mispronounced it at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts in 2019, there is still some confusion. Liu, who is best known for playing Jung Kim on Kim's Convenience but will soon be starring as the titular role in Marvel's Shang-Chi, took to Twitter to provide a "friendly #AsianHeritageMonth reminder." Simu Liu explains his name with phonetic guides is pronounced “SEE-moo LEE-ew” while his Marvel character is “SHONG-chee.” Check out Liu's tweet below:

The star previously expressed frustration on Twitter that people can pronounce names like Daenerys and Joaquin with ease but cannot pronounce his "simple-ass name." While Liu is not the only Hollywood star whose name is frequently mispronounced, as those with names like Seyfried, Theron, and Gadot can likely attest. Still, it's nice to see Liu taking the time to clear up any misconceptions for a worthy cause like Asian Heritage Month.

Hopefully, after this clarification from Liu, there will be less frequent mispronunciations of his own name and his Marvel character. Still, considering past ordeals like John Travolta's hilarious butchering of Idina Menzel's name at the 2014 Oscars, public mispronunciations probably are not going away any time soon. Audiences will become much more acquainted with Simu Liu and the pronunciation of his name when Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings releases in theaters on September 3rd.
