Simu Liu has shared a new behind-the-scenes video of himself performing an impressive bus stunt for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Director Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi sees Liu star as the titular Master of Kung Fu, Marvel Studios’ first Asian lead alongside a predominately Asian and Asian-American cast including Awkwafina, Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, and Fala Chen. Liu did most of his stunts in a century-spanning epic boasting some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s best action sequences, which pays homage to classic martial arts films.

Shang-Chi tells the origin story of the son of Wenwu/the real Mandarin (Tony Leung), who runs a criminal organization known as the Ten Rings. After spending a decade of his life in San Francisco, Shang-Chi is forced to confront his past and his family. Throughout the film’s promotional campaign, Marvel released a one-minute clip of an action sequence taking place on a crowded city bus where Shang-Chi first reveals his impressive kung fu skills to his friend Katy (Awkwafina). Liu has since said that the “iconic” sequence took over four weeks to shoot, utilized every square inch of the bus, and is one of his favorite scenes in the movie.

Liu recently posted a video to his Instagram which shows the actor practicing the stunt work for the aforementioned bus sequence. The clip sees him run and slide off the top of the bus and grab onto its side. Liu wrote on the post that “The hype train has left the station, so grab on and hang tight. Make history with us on September 3rd.” Check it out below:

The actor has also shared videos of him training for the film’s complicated choreography, which demonstrates his character’s high skill level even without the titular Ten Rings. The above clip is just a taste of the action sequences coming in Shang-Chi and Liu's dedication to his role. Before being cast in 2019, Liu tweeted Marvel about playing the role of Shang-Chi. Since that dream came to fruition, Liu has demonstrated his passion for the project at every opportunity, realizing what the film means for the Asian community. He even called out Disney CEO Bob Chapek for describing Shang-Chi as an “experiment” regarding its exclusive theatrical release before becoming available on Disney+ 45 days later.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ writers, Cretton and Dave Callaham, have worked hard to make the film and its characters honest. For example, in the comics, Shang-Chi’s father, Fu Manchu, and the Mandarin are traditionally portrayed as racist caricatures. Therefore, Leung’s version of Wenwu/the Mandarin is an original character that subverts established stereotypes and is being praised as one of the MCU’s best villains. Thanks to its performances, visuals, story, and heart, Shang-Chi currently has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and is poised to break box office records. It very well could make history on September 3rd.
