Simu Liu, star of Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings, hopes to join Marvel's other heroes on the big screen as part of a future Avengers movie. The actor is set to debut as Marvel's first Asian lead when the film releases on September 3. The film is the next chapter in Phase 4 of the MCU, following Liu's martial artist as he confronts the mysterious Ten Rings organization and the family he left behind.

The star has been open about his passion for the Marvel universe, having tweeted about wanting to play the titular character long before being cast in the role and sharing his excitement when the first teaser poster and trailer dropped on his birthday. Liu has also discussed where he would like to see his character next, revealing he would like to team up with Spider-Man in an adaptation of the Spider-Island storyline. In more recent interviews promoting the film, the actor expressed his hope to see Shang-Chi stand alongside heroes like Captain America, Captain Marvel, and Doctor Strange.

In a recent interview with THR, Liu talked about preparing himself for the fame that comes with the role. He then discussed where the character might go next and that alongside audiences, he hopes his hero will team up with the Avengers in the future. Despite this, he stated he currently isn't aware of any future plans.

"In terms of what’s next, I know what’s on my mind is the same as what’s on everybody else’s mind, and hopefully, there’s an Avengers in the future, somewhere. Obviously, I don’t know anything about that, but being such a big fan of the whole franchise, I know that that’s the gold star."

Simu Liu Shang Chi

Liu's comments follow claims by Kevin Feige that Shang-Chi will return to the MCU soon, with the producer and president of Marvel Studios also promising that "Now that people have met and seen the origin of Shang-Chi, it is safe to say he will have a great influence on the future." Feige has also discussed the future of the Avengers in the MCU, stating that Phase 4 will ask, "What does it mean to be an Avenger?" following the departure of many core members such as Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, and Natasha Romanoff in Avengers: Endgame, as well as Sam Wilson taking up the shield as Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. However, Feige soon brushed away any hopes of a team-up in the near future by saying they were still figuring out the line-up and needed time to build up to an Avengers-level event.

Despite the wait, Liu remains passionate about joining the MCU. The actor hopes to make an MCU musical while also recently revealing that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings contain the groundwork for a possible sequel, though he is currently unaware when he'll play the character again. However, with Feige's promise that the hero will return sooner than later, it is only a matter of time until Liu returns as Shang-Chi.
