A new video for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings explores the titular hero and Ten Rings' backstory in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The latest film in the long-running franchise stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi as he is forced to confront the past he thought he left behind as his father's clandestine Ten Rings organization reemerges. Alongside Liu, the cast for the film includes Awkwafina, Tony Leung as the villainous Mandarin, Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng.

The character of Shang-Chi was first created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin for 1973's Special Marvel Edition No. 15, with a film centered on the character beginning proper development nearly 20 years ago at DreamWorks. However, as the project never got off the ground, the rights would revert back to Marvel Studios and was said to be one of the many projects planned to be adapted for the big screen, though wasn't fast-tracked until 2018 when David Callaham was brought on to write and Destin Daniel Cretton set to direct a few months later. After seeing its production and release hampered by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Shang-Chi is finally right around the corner to hit theaters in September.

Though many have cried fowl for Marvel having taken so long to bring the film to life, the new Shang-Chi video does mark a nice indication that the property was always on the mind for the MCU. Taking viewers back to the first Iron Man, itself the launcher of the entire MCU, the video highlights the Ten Rings' involvement in the kidnapping of Tony Stark and the pressure put on him to develop weapons for the criminal organization. This trend of teases for the world of Shang-Chi continued in Iron Man 3, in which Ben Kingsley's Trevor Slattery posed as The Mandarin and caused havoc for the titular hero, who later learned the supposed "real" Mandarin was Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian.

While fans may have criticized the twist in the film, Marvel would course-correct with the spin-off short "All Hail the King," which helped establish the future introduction of Leung's Mandarin in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The new video for the film works well to tie all of these elements of the character's history in the MCU alongside his Ten Rings organization, but also nicely establishes the sheer power the true Mandarin has and the emotional toll his villainy will take on Liu's titular hero. With any luck, the film's portrayal of the character will go down as one of the better villains in the MCU when the film arrives in theaters on September 3.
