The first teaser for Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings gave the audience their best look at the main characters so far, among those Awkwafina’s – and here’s who she is and her role in the story. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has now begun its highly-anticipated Phase 4 with WandaVision, and its movie side will be kickstarted by Black Widow. Phase 4 will introduce a bunch of new characters, and the first in line (on the movie side) is Shang-Chi.

This hero will be introduced in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Simu Liu as the title character. The movie will follow Shang-Chi as he’s drawn into the Ten Rings organization, forcing him to confront his past and his family’s legacy. Joining Simu Liu in this new adventure in the MCU are Tony Leung as Wenwu/The Mandarin, Shang-Chi’s father; Fala Chen as Jiang Li; Meng'er Zhang as Xialing, Shang-Chi’s estranged sister; Florian Munteanu as villain Razor Fist; and Michelle Yeoh as Jiang Nan.

Also starring is Awkwafina, who shows up a couple of times in the first teaser for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Awkwafina plays Katy, Shang-Chi’s friend who will end up getting involved in his adventures and will serve as a sidekick and comic relief as well. The trailer gives a good idea of what their relationship will be like, with Wenwu’s voiceover adding some context to it as Shang-Chi was given some time to live his life, and during this time he bonded with Katy, who later on in the trailer reveals she doesn’t know a thing about his backstory.

Unlike Shang-Chi, the Mandarin, Razor Fist, and more, Katy is not a character you will find in Marvel Comics and is one of many characters created for the MCU, as is the case of Thor and WandaVision’s Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings). At this point, details about Katy, her story, and her potential abilities are unknown, but depending on where Shang-Chi will take her and how well received she is by the audience, she could be given a bigger role in the MCU, as happened with Darcy, who debuted in Thor and made her triumphant return to the MCU in WandaVision, where she was given a more prominent role than in her previous appearances in the first two Thor movies.

Katy also marks Awkwafina’s MCU debut, and even though she’s not a newcomer nor a stranger as she has appeared in movies like Ocean’s 8, Crazy Rich Asians, Paradise Hills, Jumanji: The Next Level, and she lent her voice to Sisu in Raya the Last Dragon, her appearance in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will surely give her career an even bigger boost. The bright side of minor and original characters in the MCU is that they have the potential of becoming a bigger presence as this universe expands, so this might not be the last time viewers see Katy.
