Director Destin Daniel Cretton has announced Marvel's upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has wrapped production. Cretton, who has previously collaborated with Captain Marvel star Brie Larson on all but one of his feature films, is helming the Marvel Phase 4 movie. It pits the Master of Kung Fu, played by Simu Liu, against the shadowy Ten Rings, led by The Mandarin (Tony Leung), this time around a real villain, not the controversial fake-out version played by Sir Ben Kingsley in Iron Man 3.

Besides Liu and Leung, the movie also stars Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell), Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show) and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) in undisclosed roles. The film sets up an entirely new group of characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and alongside Eternals, is one of the most anticipated Phase 4 entries in the long-running franchise. Originally slated to come out in February 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was delayed to May at one point and will now hit theaters on July 9, 2021. There have been a number of MCU movie delays caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen the franchise essentially take an over year-long break from releases.

Now, Cretton has posted an image on Instagram confirming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has officially wrapped production. The image was taken on set and features Cretton, his wife Nikki Chapman, his sister Joy, and Chinese actor Zhang Meng. The image confirms that, barring the re-shoots common on modern big-budget blockbusters, principal photography on the movie has finished. You can see the post below:

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Filming Wrap

The news means Marvel fans can now anticipate official images or perhaps even footage from the film to be released within the next few months. Given Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' coronavirus shutdown, post-production had likely already begun over the summer, so there may even be a teaser trailer released in 2020 too. The fact production has wrapped less than a year before the movie's release date is rare for a Marvel film, given the extensive post-production requirements for the CGI-laden extravaganzas, but the pandemic break may have allowed them to get ahead of schedule in that regard.

With little known about the movie besides what can be gleaned from the Marvel comics, there is hope early images will reveal exactly which characters besides those already announced will appear. Given Meng's appearance in Cretton's image, it's possible she is also starring. There is little known about how Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will tie in with the rest of the MCU, so fans will be hoping that an early teaser may reveal how the Master of Kung-Fu is introduced to the universe, especially given he is likely to be a major part of future ensemble movies going forward.
