The use of “Hotel California” by the Eagles in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a missed opportunity for a perfect Easter egg, via a Fleetwood Mac song. Music, specifically the genre of classic rock, has a long history with Marvel movies, with Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy movies being among the films that have included old rock songs in their soundtracks.

Shang-Chi followed the trend with “Hotel California”, which was a #1 hit for the Eagles in 1977. The song was actually brought up a few times by Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) and Katy (Awkwafina), who used it to distract a criminal ala Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy.  This apparently happened both on and off-screen with Katy. It was humorously used again in Shang-Chi’s ending with a karaoke scene that showed the two singing together. “Hotel California” made for a fun joke in the movie, that also had some notable, thematical connections through the lyrics which made it feel relevant to the story.

While “Hotel California” did seem to work for Shang-Chi, it still may not have been the best song choice. An arguably better option would have been something from the musical catalog of a different 1970s rock band: Fleetwood Mac. Unlike the Eagles and “Hotel California,” Fleetwood Mac has an important connection to Shang-Chi’s original comic book series, Master of Kung Fu. When the comic was being published, the group was at the height of their popularity. During this time, the comic dropped a number of references to their work. In fact, the band served as Shang-Chi’s introduction to Western music, because at the time he had just recently escaped from Fu Manchu's headquarters and was still processing of familiarizing himself with the outside world.

Shang-Chi first heard their songs through his love interest, Leiko Wu, who turned out to be a huge Fleetwood Mac fan. Through spending time with her, it didn’t take long at all before the Master of Kung Fu himself had evolved into a fan of the group. Shang-Chi’s growing appreciation for Fleetwood Mac was demonstrated on several occasions, including the time he used the words of their 1975 song, “Over My Head”, to confess his love for Leiko Wu. In one comic, the two listen to Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours album together.

Looking at all the major hits Fleetwood Mac has produced with singer Stevie Nicks and lead guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, Marvel had a long list of solid options for Shang-Chi's soundtrack, including “Go Your Own Way”, “Dreams”, “You Make Loving Fun”, “Rhiannon”, and “Don’t Stop”. It may have avoided “The Chain” regardless, considering it was already used in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, the others could have worked well, especially since Marvel apparently did make room for a few jokes about a 1970s rock song. Featuring a song from Shang-Chi’s favorite band in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in place of “Hotel California” would have been a nice touch, and an excellent homage to the comic book series that started it all.
