Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings director, Destin Daniel Cretton, is developing a new Marvel Cinematic Universe series for Disney+. The news comes alongside the announcement that Shang-Chi sequel is officially coming from Marvel Studios with Cretton returning to write and direct that as well. The Simu Liu-led superhero film is currently the highest-grossing film of the year domestically, and it has grossed a total $431M globally. The film has also been hailed as one of the MCU's best in years, making the announcement of a sequel not much of a surprise.

Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, has gone all-in on Disney+ this year with five different MCU series hitting the service since January. WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter SoldierLoki, and What If...? have all aired on the service already, and Hawkeye will be releasing its fourth episode this Wednesday. Now, the list of upcoming Marvel Disney+ series is growing even more, as Deadline reports Shang-Chi director, Cretton, is confirmed to be developing a series as well. There's currently no word on what the series will be, though many are making the assumption that the series will be connected to Shang-Chi's corner of the MCU. Feige stated that he's looking forward to continuing Marvel's creative partnership with Cretton. He said:

"Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we're thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can't wait to get started."

Cretton has also commented on his new series by saying that "Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life." The new series won't be his first for Disney+, as he is already working on an adaptation of the graphic novel, American Born Chinese, for the service. Cretton also entered a multi-year exclusive deal with Onyx Collective, meaning that he will also be developing new series for Hulu in the coming years as well.

There are a million different directions Cretton could go with his own MCU Disney+ series. One of the most likely possibilities is that the show will explore the past and future of the Ten Rings criminal organization in the MCU. Fans will remember that at the end of Shang-Chi's credits, it was written that "The Ten Rings will return" rather than Marvel's traditional "X hero will return" seen in most of their films. A Disney+ series based on the Ten Rings could further develop the organization in new ways, showing how they've influenced the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the years and how they operate now with Xialing in charge.
