Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings director, Destin Daniel Cretton, has posted a photo to social media honoring his work with Tony Leung on the film. The film marks the first Phase 4 solo film to introduce a brand-new hero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It stars Simu Liu in the titular role and is currently leading the box office.
Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings centers its story on the titular Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) as he emerges from hiding to face off against his father Wenwu (Tony Leung). The leader of the infamous Ten Rings criminal organization, Wenwu is the MCU’s true Mandarin and trains Shang-Chi to become a warrior from a young age. This eventually leads to a showdown depicted in the film, as the adult Shang-Chi emerges from hiding when Wenwu tracks him down and draws him back into the orbit of The Ten Rings.
Now, with Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings dominating the box office, the film's director Destin Daniel Cretton has taken to social media to celebrate the movie’s success. In a recent Instagram post, the director highlighted a series of behind-the-scenes photos with Tony Leung, noting the actor’s dedication and professionalism on-set. Shang-Chi has received immense praise from critics since its debut earlier this month. Much of that praise has been given to Tony Leung for his role as Wenwu. In fact, many have already begun assessing him as one of the top-tier villains in MCU history. Clearly, Cretton similarly approves of his star’s performance, as he has nothing but good things to say about Leung’s acting and demeanor on his set. Marvel initially steered clear of a traditional portrayal of The Mandarin by having Sir Ben Kingsley play a version of the character in Iron Man 3, but introducing a proper Mandarin has already generated immense buzz for the studio’s latest film.
Of course, only time will tell if there is a future for Tony Leung as Wenwu in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In his first and only outing as The Mandarin, viewers see his on-screen demise at the hands of the Dweller-in-Darkness during the film's climax. However, knowing Marvel and the history of comics in general, fans will just have to wait and see if The Mandarin returns to the silver screen for a future Shang-Chi adventure. Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings is currently in theaters.
