There are a lot of questions around Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings about its story, characters, their roles, and more, and among the most mysterious characters is Katy – but images of some toys show that there’s more to her than what it seems, and she might be hiding a big secret. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is finally moving forward with its Phase 4 now that the Infinity Saga is over, and this new wave will cover TV shows and movies and will reunite viewers with some beloved characters. Of course, Phase 4 will also bring a bunch of new characters, beginning with Shang-Chi.

On the movie side of the MCU, Shang-Chi will be the first of these new characters to be introduced, and he’s getting his own movie so viewers can really get to know him. Titled Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, it follows the title character (played by Simu Liu) as he’s drawn into the Ten Rings organization, forcing him to confront his past and his family’s legacy, which is strongly connected to that dangerous group. Joining Shang-Chi on this journey will be his friend Katy (Awkwafina), whose role has been kept a secret – and images of some toys might hint at why.

As seen in the trailers, Shang-Chi was given some time to live a normal life, during which he met Katy and they became close friends, though not so much as to reveal his backstory to her. Katy will serve as Shang-Chi’s sidekick and the movie’s comic relief, and as she’s not a character from Marvel Comics but an original creation (very much like fan-favorite Darcy Lewis), the possibilities for her are endless. Katy was initially believed to be a normal character with no superpowers nor special abilities, but new Shang-Chi toys hint at her having a connection with a Chinese god associated with chaos and showing her skills in the use of certain weapons.

The toys show Katy accompanied by a strange, faceless creature with wings named Morris and who appears to be a Dijiang, a mythological creature associated with the Chinese god Hundun. Both are described as “yellow sacks” with six feet, four wings, no face, and are associated with confusion and chaos, with Hundun considered the “primordial and central chaos”. Other toys show Katy wearing a traditional Chinese kimono and carrying a bow and arrow, so there surely is a lot more to her than what everyone believes. Perhaps Katy’s education is rooted in Chinese traditions and mythology, hence why she has a connection with a Dijiang (who appears to be a sidekick or guide as it even has a name), and was trained in the use of a bow and arrow but hadn’t had to use it until the events of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings took place.

Like all MCU movies before it, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has a couple of surprises up its sleeve and not all directly related to the title hero (just take a look at the second trailer, which featured none other than Abomination fighting Wong), and Katy could be one of the biggest surprises in the story and a potentially powerful ally to Shang-Chi depending on her connection with Hundun and her skills with the bow and arrow.
