Simu Liu reacts to the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2 announcement with a hilarious callback to critics of the film's box office numbers. Liu made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as the martial artist hero in his eponymous film earlier this year. The film chronicled his origin story as the son of the Ten Rings criminal organization leader Wenwu, also known as The Mandarin, and his attempts to live a normal life in San Francisco, only to be drawn back in upon the group's reemergence in the world.

Alongside Liu, the cast for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings included Awkwafina as his best friend Katy, Meng'er Zhang as his sister Xialing, Tony Leung as Wenwu, Fala Chen as his mother Ying Li, Ben Kingsley as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery and Michelle Yeoh as his aunt Ying Nan. Following delays in its release and production due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the film finally hit theaters in early September to rave reviews from critics and a solid box office return, grossing over $431 million against its estimated $150 million budget. This success would lead to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 2 getting announced and fans aren't the only ones excited for the newest Avenger to return.

The theatrical release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings was a subject of some division earlier this year as Marvel Studios and Disney elected to make it exclusively a big screen release in favor of a hybrid Disney+ release as taken with Black Widow earlier in the year. It also was a subject of some criticism when Disney CEO Bob Chapek described the release as an experiment for the box office pull the film could have. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' box office numbers would prove to be largely successful, setting a Labor Day weekend record with over $94 million grossed and surpassing Black Widow.

Despite this success, some audiences have attempted to downplay the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' box office, comparing it to the MCU's trend of clearing $1 billion with each title prior to the global pandemic, citing the film as a flop. Simu Liu's reaction to the Shang-Chi 2 announcement serves as a nice slam on those who tried to unfairly characterize the film's financials, proving they were ultimately on the wrong side of the argument. With writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton once again returning to the helm, the pieces are falling into place for the sequel to put the naysayers to shame once again.
