David F. Sandberg, the director of Shazam!, just released a new horror short film called Shadowed, which was filmed at his house during quarantine. Before directing the 2019 DCEU film starring Zachary Levi, Sandberg made well-produced and very terrifying short films. One in particular, called Lights Out, was extremely popular. Sandberg directed a feature version in 2016, which was his first full-length film.
Sandberg posted the new short film on his YouTube account. As with his other shorts, Shadowed stars his wife, Lotta Losten, as a woman alone in her house who is tormented by strange things in the shadows. The video description only says, "Sort of a companion piece to our short Lights Out. Watch loud in the dark."
Shortly after the release of Lights Out in theaters, a sequel was announced as being in development. Since then, there has been no further news, likely because of Sandberg directing Shazam!. After the success of that film, a sequel was quickly green-lit, and Sandberg is returning to direct. Shazam! 2 was originally expected to film this summer around the same time as Black Adam, though there's likely to be a delay.
Although his work in Shazam! is great, Sandberg clearly has a talent for creating truly creepy stories. It seems only a matter of time before he fully returns to the horror genre. Whether it's the long-awaited sequel to Lights Out or something else, if it's anything like Shadowed, it's sure to be worth the wait.
