Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is finally a real item, and it's coming next month according to a new trailer released from Square Enix earlier today. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of the most popular iterations of the franchise ever made and is well-suited for a collection of its content, with rumors circulating about a possible definitive edition since July of this year and frequently re-emerging.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a 2018 action-adventure title from developer Eidos Montreal and publisher Square Enix, and is a continuation of Lara Croft's rebooted adventures. The game takes place in the tropical regions of the Americas and features the same combination of firearm combat and stealth-based gameplay as Croft explores different hub worlds. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the final instalment in Lara Croft's origin trilogy, and although some critics had begun to grow tired of the series' repeated dips into the same gameplay mechanics, the game was widely considered to be the best refined experience of what fans had come to expect from the franchise's more modern iterations.
Those who didn't get to make up their minds for themselves will get a second chance this November, as Square Enix announced earlier today with a trailer that Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is launching November 5 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. The new collection will feature the original game, all seven DLC expansions that were released for it since 2018, and a bonus outfit for Lara Croft as well. Square Enix has also announced that the Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will make additional gameplay adjustments on top of bundling everything together, though just what those changes are remains to be seen.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider players who already own the Season Pass of the game will receive the Definitive Edition outfit for free, while the Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will now replace the Season Pass for those without that already purchased, since they serve similar functions now. With launch coming up soon, it's clear that Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition won't be making any dramatic changes, though part of the appeal will certainly be seeing what sort of tweaks Square Enix ultimately makes to the game.
November 5 is just before one of the biggest releases of the year in Death Stranding, so it remains to be seen just how much a Shadow of the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition really makes waves in the market. Still, it's by far the best option for players looking to dive into the final instalment in the origin trilogy while experiencing all of the content it has to offer, and it also might mean a new Tomb Raider tie-in or announcement is coming in the near future, too.
