A teaser trailer has landed for Shadow Of The Tomb Raider. Lara Croft became an instant gaming icon when the original Tomb Raider was released back in 1996, which featured – for the time – amazing graphics and intense gameplay. It didn't take long for sequels to arrive, with Lara being the instantly recognisable face of the franchise. The games were popular enough to spawn two movies starring Angelina Jolie in the title role, but interest in the series declined when the quality of the games began to dip.
The series was given a high-profile reboot with 2013's Tomb Raider, which found an inexperienced Lara at the beginning of her tomb raiding career and stranded on an island. It was a grittier, more grounded take on the character, which also toned down the over the top sexualization of Lara that crept into later entries. The game was a critical and commercial smash and was followed by equality well-received sequel Rise Of The Tomb Raider in 2015.
After the release date for new entry Shadow Of The Tomb Raider was accidentally unveiled yesterday when people took a look at the HTML code on the official Tomb Raider site, a teaser trailer for the game has been revealed. The brief trailer doesn't give much in the way of plot but teases an Aztec jungle setting and Lara facing off against mercenaries. The new game also promises to be "the climatic finale of Lara's origin story," meaning the franchise will likely undergo another redesign for the next title.
The announcement of Shadow Of The Tomb Raider coincides nicely with the new Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander. On the whole, reviews for the movie seem to be leaning towards the positive side, with particular praise being given to Vikander's performance. It doesn't seem likely the film will break the dreaded video game curse though, which is the assumption that every movie based on a game will suck, but at the very least reviews are stronger than those of the original Jolie series.
It will be interesting to see where the game franchise goes following the release of Shadow Of The Tomb Raider. The writer of the 2013 reboot, Rhianna Pratchett, recently said she'd love to see an older, war-torn version of the character, and explore what an aging version of Lara would be like. It's an intriguing angle for sure, but for now, nothing has been decided.
Shadow Of The Tomb Raider will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on September 14.
