A new set of first-look images from Shadow and Bone season 2 reveals where the characters find themselves in the new episodes while showing a freshly scarred Darkling. The series, which premiered on Netflix in 2021, is based on the young adult book trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. The series takes place in the kingdom of Ravka, where teenage orphan Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) whose Sun Summoner ability to manipulate light draws her into a variety of adventures with her best friend Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux).

Today, Netflix shared a gallery of first-look images from Shadow and Bone season 2. The images reveal season 2's characters both returning and new in a variety of settings including an opulent palace, an underground fighting ring, and the deck of a ship. However, one of the key revelations here is the appearance of The Darkling (Ben Barnes), who was briefly thought to have been defeated in the season 1 finale when he was carried off into the Fold by a flying volcra, but emerged at the last minute severely injured. The new image shows that he has recovered but now bears three crudely stitched black scars across his face. Check out the full-size images below:

Everything We Know About Shadow & Bone Season 2

Tamar, Nikolai and Tolya in Shadow and Bone season 2

Shadow and Bone season 2 is set up to deliver an even more sprawling epic adventure than before. This involves the addition of quite a few new characters from the books, including Nikolai Lantsov (Patrick Gibson), Wylan Hendriks (Jack Wolfe), and twins Tamar (Anna Leong Brophy) and Tolya Yul-Bataar (Lewis Tan). The show will also bump up three cast members to series regulars, namely Danielle Galligan as Nina Zenik, Daisy Head as Genya Safin, and Calahan Skogman as Matthias Helvar.

Shadow and Bone season 2, which was officially greenlit in June 2021 just a month after the premiere of season 1, will largely be based on the events of the second novel in the series, 2013's Siege and Storm. That novel followed Alina's journey further into her developing power, eventually having to choose between power and love while locked in a conflict with the Darkling, who has returned from the Fold even more determined to seize the throne of Ravka. The season will also continue the previous season's habit of incorporating elements from the spin-off novel duology Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom.

Alina will also cross paths with Nikolai, the disguised prince of Ravka who is going by the name Stormhond. As their destinies become inextricably linked, the world of Shadow and Bone will prepare for a coming battle. This season, which consists of 8 episodes just like season 1, promises to be an epic fantasy endeavor, pushing its characters to the limit in the pursuit of their aims and challenging Alina's Sun Summoner identity as never before.
