Netflix has released an interactive map of the world of Shadow and Bone, allowing fans to revisit Ravka, Ketterdam, and the rest of the Grishaverse. The fantasy series, based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling novels, has become a quick success for Netflix, earning high praise from critics, newcomers, and longtime fans alike. The show stars Jessie Mei Li as Alina, Archie Renaux as Mal, Freddy Carter as Kaz, Amita Suman as Inej, Kit Young as Jesper, and Ben Barnes as General Kirigan.

Though it deals heavily in supernatural phenomena, Shadow and Bone’s world is far from the normal fantasy fare. Bardugo used 19th century Imperial Russia as the main inspiration for the nation of Ravka, rather than resort to the medieval stylings often used in the genre. The series features revolvers and repeating rifles instead of broadswords, introducing some light steampunk elements while still staying grounded in a sense of historical realism. The world Bardugo built is a big reason why her novels have been so incredibly popular, and that world has now been successfully brought to Netflix in Shadow and Bone.

Given the events of the Shadow and Bone season 1 finale, the series may be exploring a number of new locations in the future. The multiple storylines featured in the show pull from both Bardugo’s original trilogy and the spinoff Six of Crows duology, bringing characters from the two series together in some fun ways. That structure will also allow for a lot more exploration of the world in Shadow and Bone season 2 and beyond.

If the reception to season 1 is any indication, Shadow and Bone should have a bright future ahead at Netflix. From the stellar cast to the gorgeous production design and sweeping score, the show has effectively brought Bardugo’s fantasy world to life. The series could join other recent hits like Bridgerton and Cobra Kai and longtime favorites like Stranger Things as one of Netflix’s tentpole franchises going forward. It should be exciting to see what Shadow and Bone season 2 brings.
