Warning! Spoilers ahead for Shadow and Bone season 1 and Siege and Storm.

Shadow and Bone season 1 ends with Mal and Alina boarding a ship to leave Ravka, seeking safety somewhere Alina can train and grow strong enough to take down the Fold. That quest will lead the pair far away from home, and, if the Netflix series stays true to Leigh Bardugo’s novels, on a hunt for more amplifiers to enhance Alina’s gift. But where will that journey take them?

The world of Bardugo’s Grishaverse is based generally on 19th century Europe, with Ravka being a stand-in for Russia, Kerch representing the Netherlands, and so on. Only a fraction of that world is seen in season 1 of Shadow and Bone, as most of the action takes place in Ketterdam and East Ravka. A whole continent lies to the west, across the True Sea, and it’s in that direction that Alina and Mal are heading at the end of season 1. Specifically, the boat they board is headed for Kerch.

In Bardugo’s second novel, Siege and Storm, Alina and Mal go beyond Kerch – worried that such proximity to Ravka could still be dangerous for the Sun Summoner – and settle in Novyi Zem, all the way across the True Sea. There they live a life in hiding, laying low from would-be bounty hinters and any others who might cause trouble if they knew Alina’s true identity. Unfortunately, the Darkling still catches up with them eventually, forcing the two out of hiding and on a quest back towards Ravka in search of more of Morozova’s amplifiers. With the added power, they hope, Alina might be able to make a stand against the darkness.

It’s likely that the Netflix series will follow a similar story in season 2, but it could easily make some changes. Kaz Brekker and the Dregs don’t meet Alina in the books, but since they’ve formed a tenuous alliance in the show, she could have slightly more reason to stay in Ketterdam. The end of season 1 has set up the story of Six of Crows, the first novel following the Dregs, but Kaz, Inej, Jesper and Nina could still play into Mal and Alina’s story in ways they never did in the novels.

One thing seems certain to stay the same between Siege and Storm and Shadow and Bone season 2 – Alina’s search for more of Morozova’s amplifiers. Kirigan only got stronger during his time in the Fold, and she’ll need all the help she can get to stand against him and bring the Fold down. That should set up some exciting storylines in Shadow and Bone season 2.
