Netflix has announced its upcoming reality dating show Sexy Beasts and we're going to talk about how the show is similar to two other popular reality series. The Sexy Beasts trailer has the world collectively scratching its head. Netflix seems to be branding itself as the fast-food of streaming services. Some of the platform's content may not be stellar, but it’s cheap entertainment that will kill a few hours. Netflix's bizarre offerings quickly rise to popularity, but some content is easily forgotten. For example, Tiger King was a sensation but it doesn't get much press nowadays. So naturally, when Netflix decided to create a new dating show, the platform went for the weird by adapting one of the strangest BBC reality dating shows ever.

Sexy Beasts isn’t Netflix’s first reality dating show. In 2020, the streaming service served up Love is Blind. That show featured contestants talking to prospective suitors through walls, unable to see the people they were talking to. The people then paired off and, in an almost Married at First Sight move, met face to face. They then had ten days to break it off or get engaged. Many popular contestants became Instagram-famous, and the show was a hit during lockdown. Netflix decided to repeat the success of the show while also taking a cue from another popular reality show, The Masked Singer. Sexy Beasts seems truly surreal and strange.

The new dating show Sexy Beasts replaces the wall from Love is Blind with outrageous makeup and prosthetics that call to mind The Masked Singer. The idea behind Sexy Beasts is that contestants won’t be swayed by looks. Instead, cast members will fall in love with personalities before getting a look at their dates' real faces. The result is bizarre. The makeup and prosthetics wouldn't look out of place in a Tim Burton movie. There is a dolphin, a devil, a bull, a mouse, and some unidentifiable designs.

People have already spotted a flaw in the concept of the show. Unlike The Masked Singer, Sexy Beasts contestants only disguise their heads with animal masks and other tricks. Nothing disguises the rest of their bodies. That makes it impossible to say for sure that looks aren’t playing a role in contestants' choices. It is still possible that contestants are being completely shallow by picking who they want to date based on body shapes, even if they can’t see their faces. Masked Singer puts contestants in full-body suits that disguise their body type, height, and gender.

There’s no doubt that social media will be buzzing about Sexy Beasts when it premieres on July 21. Pure curiosity will be a big draw for the show. However, only time will tell if the show can hold the audience's interest for a whole season or multiple seasons. Netflix has already baffled viewers with just the trailer, but the weird factor may not be enough. Once viewers get used to the disguises, are they going to keep tuning in? Or is it true that audiences are really only interested in the superficial?
