Sex Education season 4's story sounds so bad for Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Maeve (Emma Mackey). Netflx's coming-of-age British series is gearing up for its return on the streaming platform with new episodes. After a year of hiatus, however, it doesn't seem like it's going to be worth the wait in terms of what comes next for Otis and Maeve.

Netflix is starting its marketing campaign for Sex Education season 4 by releasing a synopsis. The brief reveals that after Moordale Secondary School's abrupt closure, Otis finds himself with Eric, played by the latest Doctor Who, Ncuti Gatwa, in a new academic institution to continue his studies. He also deals with no longer being a single child with the arrival of his sibling. Meanwhile, Maeve continues her international study program in the United States where she currently thrives in. While both seem to do just fine in Sex Education season 4, their respective situations should be a cause for concern for their long-gestating romance.

When Sex Education season 3 ended, there was an idea that season 4 will finally deliver on the pair's love story. While they did have to part ways again so Maeve can pursue her dreams, she said that it doesn't mean that they are officially going their separate ways. Instead, they're merely delaying properly starting a romance as she focuses on the incredible opportunity presented to her. Unfortunately, with the way Sex Education season 4 is formatted, it seems like the show will once further delay the pair's reunion. Maeve and Otis' will-they/won't-they dynamic has been stretched out for far too long, continuously doing it in the new season will be incredibly frustrating. Even if they ultimately get together at the end of Sex Education season 4, it may no longer have the impact that Netflix is striving for simply because they waited way too long to offer a pay-off to this storyline.

Sex Education Should Just Give Up Otis & Maeve

Maeve-Otis-Sex Education Season 2

At this point, it's best that Sex Education simply just give up making Otis and Maeve work. When the show started, it was clear that it was setting up the pair to be romantically linked. However, much has happened to them in the last three seasons of the series. In Sex Education season 3, Otis dated Ruby (Mimi Keene). The positive response to that pairing could be interpreted as an indication that it's too late for Otis and Maeve. Now that it seems like Sex Education season 4 will keep them separated, at least in the beginning, the show might as well own up to the fact that it milked their back-and-forth dynamic too much that bringing them together would not only feel predictable, but it would also be anti-climactic.

Following the departure of many cast members, it feels like Sex Education is nearing its natural endpoint. Whether or not Netflix moves past it remains uncertain, especially considering how popular the show has been with both critics and fans. So, even if it finally delivers on its promises of a Maeve and Otis love affair, there may not be enough time to actually make the whole wait worth it.
