Warning: SPOILERS for Sex Education season 2.

With season 2 out now, Sex Education season 3 is something fans are looking forward to. Created by Laurie Nunn, the teen comedy series takes place in the UK and explores themes of sexuality, race, and mental health. Sex Education season 2 focuses on a group of UK high schoolers looking for happiness and healthy relationships, continuing off the story of Sex Education season 1.

Asa Butterfield stars as Otis Milburn, a nervous teenager who gives sex advice to fellow students - the result of lessons learned from his sex therapist mother, Jean (Gillian Anderson). In Sex Education season 2, Otis tries to romance Ola Nyman (Patricia Allison), but keeps thinking about his unrequited feelings for Maeve Wiley (Emma Mackey). The second installment of the Netflix series features numerous romantic subplots involving characters of different races and backgrounds, including Eric Effiong (Ncuti Gatwa), Adam Groff (Connor Swindells), Jackson Marchetti (Kedar Williams-Stirling), Aimee Gibbs (Aimee Lou Wood), Lily Iglehart (Tanya Reynolds), Otis' new love interest Ruby (Mimi Keene), and a French foreign exchange student named Rahim (Sami Outalbali).

In Sex Education season 2's final episodes, Otis remains nervous as ever but has indeed lost his virginity. Unfortunately, unresolved personal issues lead to some public meltdowns, which means that Otis isn't viewed as the ideal romantic partner by many of his female peers. Maeve expresses her feelings, but has much to deal with given her mother's drug relapse. So, will Otis and Maeve ever hook up? Here's what to expect for Sex Education season 3 on Netflix?

Sex Education Season 3 Renewal

Netflix hasn't ordered Sex Education season 3, and probably won't make an official renewal or cancellation announcement until February or early March. In general, the streaming service typically waits three to six weeks to assess general reactions and streaming numbers. For context, Sex Education season 1 released on January 11, 2019, and was renewed three weeks later on February 1. Given the series' popularity, if Netflix greenlights Sex Education season 3, it should happen by the end of February.

It's hard to imagine that Netflix won't order Sex Education season 3. Season 2 effectively develops the various storylines and characters, and teases a potential hookup that fans seem to want. Given the release dates for season 1 and 2, it's probable that Sex Education season 2 will release in mid-January 2020.

Sex Education Season 3 Story Details

The bigs news from Sex Education season 2 is that Otis has expressed his love for Maeve, and that his mother Jean is pregnant. Interestingly, neither of their romantic interests have received that information. With Jean, she has to be especially careful with her communication, as she's had some rough talks with her son about his covert sex advice business. And Otis hasn't told Maeve face-to-face that he loves her, but rather through an audio recording. Meanwhile, Adam takes a more direct approach by expressing his admiration, in public, for Eric Effiong. For dramatic purposes, it seems possible that Maeve may not receive the news somehow, and that Otis will continue to get lost in his own thoughts.

But we do know this: Ola has gotten over Otis and forms a romantic relationship with Lily. Jackson also takes a direct approach with communication, and tells his mother that he doesn't want to swim anymore. Even Otis looks his father in the eye and expresses concerns, hoping to better understand why his education doesn't always properly translate to personal relationships. The wildcard, as of now, could be Ruby's obvious interest in Otis, and a small bit of female backlash against Maeve. Sex Education season 3 on Netflix will probably shuffle things even more, and introduce new characters who may have better luck than poor Rahim.
