Sex Education has begun production on season 2. The coming-of-age British comedy-drama became a smash hit on Netflix when it was released in January. Sex Education, along with fellow original YOU, surpassed their predicted 40 million views. Acclaimed by critics and viewers alike, the series was quickly ordered for a second season.

Created by Laurie Nunn, Sex Education follows the trials and tribulations of teenager Otis (Asa Butterfield), who navigates his virginal high school years while living with his sex therapist mom Dr. Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson). Flanked by his friends, Eric (Ncuti Gatwa) and Maeve (Emma Mackey), Otis begins a covert sex therapy clinic. Imbued with hilarious moments and quirky adolescent strife, the series also touches on serious issues, including bullying, sexuality, abortion, and identity. After exponential character growth, the season ended after eight episodes with untied storylines left dangling in the air.

The freshman season of Sex Education was written by Nunn and executive produced by Jamie Campbell and Ben Taylor. Nunn and Campbell are slated to take the creative reins for season 2. Along with Butterfield, Anderson, Gatwa, and Mackey, Aimee-Lou Wood (Aimee), Connor Swindells (Adam), Patricia Allison (Ola), Kedar Williams-Stirling (Jackson), and Alistair Petrie (Mr. Groff) are set to reprise their roles. Netflix has indulged fans by offering a look at the cast’s reactions to the season 2 scripts. See the video below:

From Mackey - who plays the brilliant and wild Maeve - hanging her head in embarrassment to Anderson and Swindells embracing, to a fervent round of applause from the cast, the table read seems a success. The writing of season 2 will no doubt tote a slew of heartwarming moments, sexually-awkward instances and more bad behavior. As for a release date for season 2, audiences may have to wait a bit longer. The streaming giant didn’t drop the trailer for season 1 until nine days before the premiere in January. However, after the tremendous reception of season 1, Netflix may be so inclined to release a trailer for the sophomore season sooner. The series is expected to produce another eight episodes, with a possible return in January of 2020.

At first glance, Sex Education looks to be a blatantly inauthentic show about teenagers. However, the Netflix original with its formula consisting of brilliant narrative, powerful performances and unapologetic stances on issues, has created a relatable show. The series has sparked conversations about topics needing to be resolved in the future while giving nuggets of nostalgia. There's no telling how long Netflix will carry out the series since high school shows always prove tricky to surpass graduation, but season 2 of Sex Education will likely be another winner for Netflix.
