The Netflix hit show, Sex Education, is no doubt a drama with comedic elements and, although it’s an extremely funny show, its roots in drama are more obvious than the idea that Otis and Maeve should end up together.

Polling in as one of the most interesting and thought-provoking shows out right now, Sex Education definitely has some extremely sad quotes and leaves everyone wanting more. Throughout its three seasons, the show has only become more and more profound, and it is bound to get even sadder as it goes on.

Otis Having An Honest Confession With His Mother:

“I Realized I Still... I Still Behave Like A Child Most Of The Time, And I Pretend To Be So Grown Up. I Still Need You.”

Otis and Jean talking to each other in Sex Education

At the end of season three, when Jean has her baby, there was a heartbreaking moment where Jean suffered a medical complication that puts her life at risk. And although Jean ends up being okay, Otis still has a few words for his mom to show her how much he cares about her.

When Otis says, “I still need you,” it’s a real moment of maturity from Otis that the audience doesn’t typically see. Usually, Otis does act quite like a child around his mom and doesn't open up to her much because he feels independent or that she might psychoanalyze him. However, the emotional growth he underwent in season 3 proved that he wasn't as "grown-up" as he had believed. There's still so much he has to learn, which, hopefully, will be explored in season 4.

Aimee Responding To Being Asked What She Wants:

“I Don't Know What I Want. No One Has Ever Asked Me That Before.”

Aimee is perhaps one of the most underrated characters in Sex Education and definitely deserved more screen time in season three. She’s also someone that fans can relate to as well.

When someone finally asks Aimee what does she want, she doesn’t know what to say because no one has ever asked her that before. Aimee has been taken advantage of time and time again throughout the show, whether it is for her house or her wealth (she has even been taken advantage of by those who she considered to be close friends). It's heartbreaking and quite emotional moment to see the exact moment when Aimee realizes this herself. Luckily, this seems to be changing in season 4 as Aimee does look like she's been trying to rediscover herself.

Otis Confessing To Maeve:

“I Did The Clinic To Be Close To You.”

Of course, the will-they-or-won’t-they-get-together troupe between Otis and Maeve is excruciating throughout the three seasons, but this quote is a moment where Otis actually is honest with Maeve about how he feels.

He did the clinic to be closer to Maeve, which everyone in the audience already knew, but it feels good to hear him finally say it. This quote in particular is sad because no matter what Otis does, something always tears him and Maeve apart.

Maeve Being Honest:

“I'm Sh*t At Asking For Help And I Push People Away.”

Maeve is one of the most relatable characters in the show, and when she says, “I’m sh*t at asking for help and I push people away,” it’s a moment of real honesty that anyone can relate to.

Everyone, at one point or another, has pushed people away after they have offered help, and that’s what makes this quote so sad because everyone can relate to it. But, this quote is also a turning point for Maeve and who she wants to be as a person, which includes working on letting people in when they are trying to help.

Kyle Actually Making A Profound Comment:

“My Point Is That We Should Try And Live In The Moment Because We Don't Have Long. So, If You Love Someone, You Should Tell 'Em That You Love 'Em. Tell 'Em Now. Because It Might Be Too Late.”

One of the characters that would be least likely to say something both heartbreaking and profound is Kyle. He’s a little bit idiotic, but when he talks about love, he does have some important things to say.

What’s beautiful about this quote is that it happens after Otis and Maeve are stranded at the gas station having a real heart-to-heart (which leads to them kissing in front of everyone). But, what’s sad about this quote is that Ruby is listening to this on the bus and she did take a chance by telling Otis she loved him. Sadly, it resulted in her getting heartbroken.

Maureen Being The Queen She Is:

“When You Love A Person, There's Always A Tiny Part Of You That's Terrified That One Day You're Gonna Lose Them.”

One of the best characters to take center stage in season three is Adam’s mom, Maureen. With her never-ending wisdom and general caring attitude, this quote is one of the saddest from Sex Education because everyone both in the show and in real life can relate to it.

Everyone who loves someone is terrified of losing them, and sometimes that tiny part can become bigger and, that tiny part is right and people do lose people they love. It's a sad reality of life that Maureen so eloquently points out.

Adam And His Thoughts On Himself

“I'm Very Easy To Not Like.”

Adam is one of those characters from Sex Education that has incredible character growth throughout the season. Not only does he go from being an abusive jerk to an open, caring, and loving person, but he also learns a lot about himself.

Maybe he’d think differently about himself after the premiere of season 4, but it’s still incredibly sad that this is how he views himself. If only Adam could see himself the way the rest of the world does.

Otis Being Honest:

“Look... Sometimes, The People We Like Don't Like Us Back, And It's Painful, But There's Nothing We Can Do About It.”

An image of Otis and Eric looking at someone in Sex Education

Otis has some of the most profound quotes throughout all seasons of the show, but this quote has to be one of the saddest.

In this quote, he’s both giving advice to someone else about their love life, but it’s clear that there are some double meanings hidden underneath these words, and that he’s really talking about how he feels about Maeve. Little does Otis know that, in a couple of seasons, he could find himself with the girl that he believes doesn’t like him back. However, whether this will last is something fans will have to wait for since there are now a lot of Sex Education fans who want him to end up with Ruby.

Adam Being Cynical:

“Dreams Aren't Real. That's Why They Are Called Dreams.”

Another moment where Adam is being extremely sad with his words is when he says that “dreams aren’t real.” And, for people that have watched all three seasons of the show, this quote makes sense. For Adam, he hasn't been able to get everything he’s wanted in life since he’s been too unintelligent or unmotivated to get it, but that doesn’t mean there still isn’t hope for Adam’s dreams.

One of the final things that happen for Adam in season three is that he gets an honorable mention in a dog show with Madame as their debut competition. So, it begs the question, will Adam’s dreams of winning a dog show come true in season four? Hopefully, this is one question about season 3 the Sex Education writers will address.

Otis Being Honest Part 2:

“I F***ing Turned Myself Inside Out Liking You.”

Otis is, no doubt, the most dramatic character on Netflix’s Sex Education, and when he confronts Maeve by telling her that he turned his life inside out by liking her (or in reality, loving her), it’s sad because he is too ignorant to see what’s been in front of him the entire time: that Maeve does love him and does want to be with him.

Only time will tell what the future holds for this couple in season four and if there will be more sad and dramatic scenes that will break the fans' hearts further.
