Warning: SPOILERS for Sex Education season 2.

Sex Education season 2 throws a wrench in Otis and Maeve's potential romantic relationship, but considering everything that's happened to them so far, they should still end up together in the long run. Portrayed by Asa Butterfield and Emma Mackey, respectively, their personal and professional relationship grounds the Netflix series. Otis and Maeve run a sex advice business together and seem to understand their fellow students. But are they good for each other? The answer is yes.

In Sex Education season 1, Otis develops a crush on Maeve but just can't establish the romantic connection that’s he’s looking for. Maeve has a change of heart, but then spots Otis kissing Ola Nyman (Patricia Allison) as the season ends. During Sex Education season 2, Otis struggles during intimate moments with Ola, thus leading to awkward conversations about pleasure principles. Meanwhile, Maeve - now with a new look - returns to Moordale High and accepts that she’s not over Otis. The duo reignite their covert sex advice operation, and Maeve ultimately expresses her feelings to Otis, who panics and gets drunk at a house party. He manages to offend both Ola and Maeve; a moment that benefits the interests of Isaac (George Robinson), a disabled teenager with a crush on his neighbor, Maeve. Sex Education season 2 ends with Otis, now single, expressing his love for Maeve, only his voicemail message is deleted by Isaac.

Otis and Maeve should be together in Sex Education season 3, primarily because they understand each other on a personal level. Despite their different upbringings, they steadily build a solid friendship, both by being honest with each other and by discussing the sexual problems of their peers. Whereas many Moordale High students are still grappling with their sexuality and romantic approaches, Otis and Maeve have an open relationship, at least in terms of communicating about basic concepts that make so many teenagers tremble. In theory, after a genuine heart-to-heart about their hopes and concerns, Otis and Maeve will have a healthy starting point moving forward. Isaac is the wildcard, of course, but seems like someone who will do the right thing, even if it’s a matter of basic transparency and being completely honest.

Sex Education Season 3

On a deeper level, both Otis and Maeve are simultaneously experiencing problems with their mothers. In Sex Education season 3, that’s probably what will lead to a big romantic moment. For dramatic purposes, the next installment will likely open with some awkward conversations and romantic misdirection. But once Otis learns about his mother’s pregnancy, he’ll probably end up having a serious conversation with Maeve, who will then discuss her mother’s drug relapse. They’ll bond, let their guards down, and then discover what’s been keeping them apart, and why. And then it’s onto the next phase: sexual intimacy and make-or-break bedroom experiences.

Otis is no longer a virgin, so he doesn’t have to carry that psychological baggage anymore. He’s still a wildly nervous teenager, however, one who can self-destruct rather quickly. But Otis' emotional intelligence continues to develop as he better understands himself and the advice that he gives to others. It’s indeed possible that Otis and Maeve simply won’t connect intimately. At this point, though, it seems that Otis’ sexual and emotional growth will lead to a positive and organic romance with Maeve. And that connection could very well inspire their fellow students, which would in turn allow Sex Education to live up to its title, as opposed to being just a raunchy series about teenagers.
