Otis Milburn is the main character of Netflix's Sex Education, a British comedy-drama set in the vibrant town of Moordale. Otis is also the son of Dr. Jean Milburn, a sex and relationships therapist. As an intensely introverted, often anxious teen, Otis doesn't feel very comfortable with this situation, especially when Maeve convinces him to start a sex therapy clinic of his own.
The outgoing and energetic Eric Effiong is Otis's unlikely best friend, who balances out Otis's over-analyzing nature. Their dynamic makes for some hilarious back-and-forths, but Otis is pretty funny on his own, too. The series is a comedy, after all. Here are ten of Otis's funniest quotes so far.
"Who Goes There?"
In the first episode of season 2, Otis and Eric return to Moordale Secondary to find the school overrun with chlamydia. The boys escape to the bathroom to discuss Otis's "wank problem", but they realize they're not alone in there.
Someone makes a sound in one of the cubicles; alarmed, Otis grips the door and whispers, "Who goes there?" They peer into the empty hallway, mystified and afraid as Owen sheepishly emerges from one of the stalls. Later, the boys discover he is the source of the outbreak.
"I Might Have Said Something About Chinchillas Giving Blowjobs."
Otis's first therapy session doesn't exactly go according to plan. He tries to understand why Olivia keeps experiencing "a bout of emesis during fellatio", but of course, she has no idea what he's talking about when he uses this over-formal language.
He tries to reassure her: "At the zoo, I once saw a chinchilla fellate itself!" Olivia storms out. Otis emerges sheepishly and admits that he "might have said something about chinchillas giving blowjobs." Maeve and Eric groan in disappointment and frustration.
"I Was Gonna Cook A Roast Chicken. But I Didn't ... Or Did I?"
Otis plans to have a small gathering of friends over at his house to prove to Maeve and Ola that he's "chill". He divulges his plan to Eric on their way to school. "I am going to have a small gathering of friends at my house tonight. And I'm going to cook a roast chicken," he says proudly.
Outraged, Eric yells at him, "Don't cook a roast chicken! Cooking a roast chicken is not chill." They spend the day bickering over the roast chicken. At the party, Otis stumbles across Jackson and tells him that he was going to cook a roast chicken, but didn't - or did he? Later, Otis dances with the chicken held high, spitting chunks of it onto the floor.
"Nice To See You Again. Cause I Saw You This Morning. At School. Not In My Dreams."
Otis has a ... dream about Maeve and thinks he's suddenly Hannibal Lecter. Eric assures him that it's normal (by shouting in the middle of an assembly where Mr. Groff is talking about "Ugandan sanitary products").
Meanwhile, Maeve is looking for someone to pick her up from the abortion clinic after school. She approaches Otis after the assembly, who is startled by her sudden appearance and accidentally admits to having a dream about her.
"On Time Is Late."
One of the most memorable quotes of the series is this one, and nobody really knows what it means. This may be why it's so funny - well, that, and the occasions Otis chooses to use this phrase.
He always finds the worst times to recite this iconic quote, like when he and Eric are debating whether or not to ring the buzzer to Aimee Gibbs' house, or when he arrives an hour early to pick up Maeve from the abortion clinic.
"I'm Otis. Some People Call Me O-Town."
Note: the only person who calls Otis O-Town is Otis. Jackson calls him O-Dog when he's seeking help in getting to know Maeve, but otherwise, he's just known as Otis. Although, Eric occasionally calls him Oatcake.
In season 2, Otis for some reason introduces himself as O-Town twice. The first time is when he's approaching Jackson to question him about giving chlamydia to Martha and Gwen, and the second is when he meets Isaac at his party.
"You Could Be Like A Housecat, If You Don't Like Goats. You Know The Skinny Ones That Just Stare At You?"
Otis asks Ola to the dance in season 1, where the two have a good time. That is, until Ola questions Otis about whether or not he's ever been romantically involved with Maeve. He makes a fool of himself telling Ola that Maeve would never date someone like him because he's like a kangaroo or an armadillo on the social food chain, whereas Maeve is more like a panther or a lion.
When Ola asks him what she is, he says, "You could be like, you know those goats that stand on really steep cliffs and just kind of stick?" Then he says she could be a housecat if she doesn't like goats. Ola says he's not a kangaroo; he's an a**hole.
"You Are A Sneaky, Sneaky Woman!"
Otis and Jean are constantly finding something to argue over, but they usually find ways to set things right. At the end of season 1, Otis learns that his mother has written a book about his sexual repression/dysfunction.
Otis becomes petty and their argument takes them to Otis's room, where he turns the music up to block her out, and she turns it down before eventually ripping the stereo from its cable. Lost for words, Otis hisses, "You are a sneaky, sneaky woman!"
"I Don't Have A Phone. What? I Do! It's Broken. Right? ... Thank Goodness For Insurance. Whew!"
Otis gets a bit flustered when Maeve suggests they start a sex therapy clinic. In fact, when she calls him about it, he throws his phone to the ground with a cry. He makes scratchy noises and pretends the reception is faulty.
When Maeve confronts him in the hallway, Otis is startled and sputters out a lame excuse. Maeve tells him to stop talking, clearly not fooled. She asks him if he can do a session at lunch, and he just stares. Eric nods for him, and Otis finally says yes.
"I Also Want You To Know That If You Are Pregnant And Choose To Keep The Baby, I'll Quit School, Get A Job, And Provide For You Both."
After Otis's crazy party, he wakes up with a severe hangover to find Ruby getting dressed beside him. To make matters worse, Ruby is unsure whether or not they used protection.
Ruby feels embarrassed about buying the morning after pill while insisting that she's not having Otis's "pale, unusually long children". Otis reassures her and also tells her that he's willing to support her and a baby. She scowls at him before the shot cuts to her at the counter, asking for the pill.
