Summary

  • Samantha and Smith's relationship was initially casual but evolved into a deep love story, overcoming challenges and becoming endgame.
  • Samantha and Smith's breakup in the movie showed Samantha's growth and prioritization of her own dreams and happiness over the relationship.
  • Fans felt the absence of Samantha and Smith in the revival series, showcasing their significant impact on the original show's dynamic.

Sex and the City follows four young women as they follow their dreams (both romantic and professional) in New York City in the late 1990s/early 2000s. While the big focus was on Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), the narratives of her friends and her relationships with them provided the audience with plenty of entertaining stories. One of those friends is Samantha (Kim Cattrall), a sex-positive public relations professional whose outgoing nature adds a specific brand of chemistry to the group of friends.

Fans were divided on the revival, And Just Like That, but everyone agreed it was missing the original show's magic because of Samantha's absence. For years, Samantha was known for her love of casual sex, but that all changed in the sixth season of the original series when she dated Smith (Jason Lewis). Samantha met Jerry "Smith" Jerrod while eating at a restaurant and the two became infatuated with each other. Although Samantha swore off relationships for a while, Smith changed her mind and proved that not all relationships were chaotic and untrustworthy. They made one of the show's best couples.

Seasons 1 - 5

Samantha Enjoys Being Single

For the first five seasons of Sex and the City, Samantha Jones is not looking for commitment. She wants to have fun and experience everything single life in the city has to offer. Before meeting Smith Jerrod in season six, she has 38 different relationships - mostly casual.

Samantha is not averse to simply having a good time with someone and moving on.

Most of those relationships are one-night stands. Samantha is not averse to simply having a good time with someone and moving on to someone else. She is not looking for an attachment or a long-term companion. Her friends are looking for stability and perfection in their relationships, especially Charlotte, and Samantha doesn't want the same things in life as them. She's focused on her career and enjoying her life, which is part of what makes the show so loved. Each of the women wants different things from the romantic, sexual, or professional relationships in their lives.

Samantha does have a handful of relationships before meeting Smith that feature multiple dates. There's James in season 1, Maria in season 4 when Samantha decides she needs to experience a relationship that doesn't involve a man, and Richard in seasons 4 and 5. Of those, the only serious one is Richard, who is a serial cheater and destroys Samantha's trust, causing her to break up with him early in season 5.

When Samantha meets Smith, she is still hurt by the relationship with Richard and doesn't want anything serious. Smith surprises her.

Season 6

Samantha And Smith Meet And Date

Jerry "Smith" Jerrod met Samantha in the second episode of season 6, "Great Sexpectations." In the episode, Smith was working in a restaurant and ended up waiting on Samantha's table. By the end of the night, she made it her mission to sleep with him. The following night, Samantha went back to the restaurant by herself and stayed there until she made an impression. Her flirtations worked, and the two went home together. This was the start of Smith and Samantha, not to mention an episode that fans of Smith and Samantha love to rewatch.

Samantha, it has to be noted, wasn't initially looking for anything serious, but thought their attraction to one another deserved to be explored. After their first night together, they hit it off, and eventually, Samantha was even willing to mix business and pleasure. She gave Smith excellent career advice for someone looking to make it in the world of show business. With him being a young, out-of-work actor, Samantha agreed to make Smith a star and acted as his publicist.

Samantha got him a catering job while he looked for modeling/acting work and soon enough, she got him to be the face of Absolut Vodka. In "Hop, Skip, and a Week," Samantha convinced Smith to change his name from Jerry Jerrod to Smith Jerrod, and a star was born. All the while, Samantha and Smith were still sleeping with each other while helping each other with work.

After Smith's Absolut Hunk ad went viral, getting work became easier for him. While his star was rising, Samantha felt like her job was done. However, Smith became more attached to her. While preparing Smith for an interview on MTV, Samantha told him to tell the crowd that he was single because she wasn't ready to have the commitment conversation with him. But the minute she heard him tell everyone he was single, a twinge of regret came across her face. It was clear to the audience, even if it wasn't to Samantha, that she had deeper feelings for him.

Later, Samantha had to get used to Smith wanting to be with her and holding her hand in public. It was awkward at first, but Samantha soon loved Smith's admiration for her. Just as the two were getting closer, however, Richard came back into her life. He made an appearance in "Let There Be Light,". Fans weren't sure if she was going to fall for him all over again or if she'd stick by Smith's side.

Sadly, Samantha felt she was better suited for Richard and told Smith to hang out with people his own age. Samantha slept with Richard that night, but she felt sick over it because she couldn't believe she hurt Smith in such a cold way. As Samantha was leaving Richard's room, she found Smith waiting by the elevator for her — he wanted to make sure she got home okay. This small act of love was enough for Samantha to cry, apologize, and recommit herself to Smith.

If that had been the end for Sex and the City, Smith and Samantha's romantic relationship would have ended on a high note.

In "The Ick Factor," Samantha was shocked when she learned she had breast cancer. Not one for the dramatics, Samantha handled the situation head-on and refused to have Smith pity her. To her surprise, he was one of her greatest pillars of support. In a lot of ways, Samantha didn't realize how much she needed Smith until he continually showed up by her side. A deeply romantic moment between the two happened when Smith walked in on Samantha shaving her head after chemo. To show his love, he too shaved his head to make her more comfortable.

In the series finale, Sex and the City made Smith and Samantha one of the endgame couples, which might have surprised some of the audience. Smith and Samantha told each other they loved one another and were one of the strongest relationships of the entire show. If that had been the end for Sex and the City, Smith and Samantha's romantic relationship would have ended on a high note.

The Sex & The City Movie

Samantha And Smith Break Up

Samantha breaking up with Smith in Sex And The City

It was surprising when Sex and the City got a big screen sequel, but even more surprising was that Smith carried over to the movie from the show. Fans were thrilled to find out that Samantha and Smith were still going strong in the first Sex and the City movie. Due to Smith's stardom, the couple moved from New York City to Hollywood.

Samantha and Smith proved to be a relatable couple in the way that they were still trying to keep the romance alive despite a hectic work schedule. With Smith being so busy, Samantha traveled to New York whenever she could to hang out with Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda. The more she was in New York, the more Samantha realized that she lost herself in her relationship. It was no longer about her dreams; it was about their dreams as a couple. At the end of the movie, Samantha broke up with Smith because she loved herself more than their relationship.

While that might have been sad for fans of the relationship, it is a great realization for Samantha who has always been more self-aware when compared to the other characters. She realized her own life and dreams ended up taking a back seat to Smith's, even if he didn't intend for that to happen. Her breaking up with him to focus on herself is a great moment of growth for her.

Sex & The City 2

Samantha And Smith Remain Friends In The Movie Sequel

Smith and Samantha in a club on Sex and the City

Two years after the first movie was released, a sequel came out. Sex and the City 2 reunited the four women for a big screen adventure, but it took the group to Abu Dhabi for a vacation instead of keeping all of the action in New York. Samantha was still single and loving life since her breakup with Smith, but she was also the only woman in the group going through menopause and trying to maintain her libido with the help of hormone supplements.

Even with that being her major storyline, the movie still reminded audiences of her relationship with Smith because it revealed they were still in contact and friendly. Smith and Samantha still being in contact is an anomaly for Samantha. She doesn't keep in contact with past lovers, so it shows that Smith is still special to her.

Smith called Samantha and asked her to be his date to a big movie premiere. He told her that his career wouldn't have happened without her, and he owed his success to her. The former couple got along well and were in great spirits after his premiere. Sadly, this was the last fans saw of Samantha and Smith since neither of them appeared in the revival, And Just Like That...

Samantha And Smith's Absence Is Noticeable In The Sex And The City Revival Series

A text message thread shows that Carrie and Samantha agree to get drinks in Paris in And Just Like That

Smith's presence, alongside Samantha's, is missed.

In 2021, And Just Like That... continued the story of Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte. Sadly, Samantha and Smith were not in it. Since Kim Cattrall didn't want to be part of the revival, the show saw her moving away to London after getting into a tiff with Carrie. The two friends not speaking allowed for a reason to not have Samantha be involved in the goings-on of her friends back in New York.

Fans of the original series were surprised when And Just Like That... was renewed for a second season because many thought it wasn't the same without Samantha. Nevertheless, in the final season 2 episode, Samantha was willing to meet up with Carrie for a drink to smooth things over, but nothing is known about Samantha's relationship (or friendship) with Smith. As one of Samantha's best romantic interests in Sex and the City, Smith's presence, alongside Samantha's, is missed.
