Sex and the City revival star, Nicole Ari Parker, promises her character isn’t a replacement for Samantha Jones. During the late ‘90s, Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City novel was scooped up by show creator Darren Star to become a groundbreaking, award-winning, and legendary series for HBO. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Kim Cattrall, the show centers on four friends - Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha - as they navigate life and love in New York City.

Earlier this year, HBO revealed that a Sex and the City reboot series, titled And Just Like That…, was coming to HBO Max, sans Cattrall’s Samantha Jones. Helmed by Michael Patrick King, the new installment of Sex and the City will feature numerous characters from the original series and introduce a fresh batch of diverse cast members. Set to play a new character, Lisa Todd Wexley, Parker’s involvement has led to the speculation that her character was poised to replace the sex-positive, outspoken Samantha from the quartet of friends.

According to THR (per ETCanada), Parker insists that her character is not a replacement for Samantha in And Just Like That.. . Revealing of the reboot that “Everyone’s still having sex and it’s wonderful,” Parker clarified there are four new women of color joining the show. Dispelling the rumors that her character was written in to fill the void Samantha leaves behind, Parker said the speculations are “not true at all.” Check out Parker's full comments below:

When it first came out that I was replacing the Samantha character — which is not true at all, so please write that — I have been yelled at, and I’ve also been attacked with love. I’ve been photographed in places I should never be photographed. The fans are so excited and over the top. I had some idea of that because I am one of those fans but I had no idea [the extent of it].

Of course, major plot details of And Just Like That… remain under wraps. However, Parked recently offered some insight on the series and revealed that some of the storylines will revolve around race. Slated to debut on HBO Max in December, And Just Like That… continues to keep viewers guessing on Carrie’s potential new love interest, how the coronavirus pandemic altered the main protagonists, and how Samantha’s absence will be addressed.

Indeed, Samantha’s absence explained as simply moving on from the friendships may not sit well with fans. Once described by Mr. Big (Chris Noth) as the loves of Carrie’s life, the familial friendships and unshakeable bond the women shared are some of the reasons why the franchise was so successful. Sex and the City provided a platform for discussion on topical issues with each character providing their four individual perspectives. For now, fans can look forward to seeing the four new women of color adding diversity to And Just Like That... which the original series certainly lacked. It’ll be interesting to see what will become of Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda in the Sex and the City reboot.
