Sex and the City could be making a comeback - sans one cast member. The classic HBO show ran for six seasons from 1998 to 2004. The series spawned two movies, with rumors of a third one swirling in Hollywood for years. That film has never gotten off the ground, though, mainly because of one star's resistance to reuniting with her cast members.

Kim Cattrall, who played Samantha Jones in the series and both movies, has made her disdain for her time on the show widely known. She has blasted Sarah Jessica Parker on Instagram and in interviews as being cruel during their time on the show. Parker, who plays protagonist Carrie Bradshaw, has tried to play off the tensions and remedy the situation, but it sounds like Cattrall remains steadfast in her feelings.

Page Six is the first to report that a reboot is in the works at HBO Max. Per Deadline, the show would be a limited event series exclusively on HBO Max. The show originally aired on HBO linearly, but the reboot would be a streaming exclusive. The core cast, including Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis, are in talks to return, with holdout Cattrall already making it known that she is against revisiting the series.

Reports of a reboot for Sex and the City are not surprising - just about every iconic television show of the early aughts has had a reboot or revival in the works. With whispers of a third film circulating for years, it seems the project has finally shifted to HBO Max, its logical home. The streamer is trying to shore up subscribers during its first year and a reboot of such a popular property would certainly help. Although it may seem like the time has passed for the show, there's a unique opportunity here.

A reboot of Sex and the City could be particularly timely. The show was groundbreaking in its time for its honest depictions of female sexuality. Although problematic at times, the show dealt with many issues that were previously taboo for television. The show could do so again, with Parker suggesting in past interviews that a Sex and the City revival could tackle such topics as sexual politics on social media and the Time's Up and #MeToo movements. That would be a lot of ground to cover for a limited series, but if anyone can do it, it's Carrie Bradshaw.
