The Sex and the City reboot could have more than one season, says producer Michael Patrick King. During the late ’90s, Candace Bushnell’s Sex and the City novel was scooped up by show creator Darren Star to become a groundbreaking, award-winning, and legendary series for HBO. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Kim Cattrall, the show centers on four friends - Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha - as they navigate life and love in New York City.

Earlier this year, HBO announced that a Sex and the City revival series, titled And Just Like That…, was coming to HBO Max, sans Cattrall’s Samantha Jones. Helmed by King, the new installment of Sex and the City will feature numerous characters from the original series and introduce a fresh batch of diverse cast members. Recently, HBO Max unveiled the trailer for And Just Like That…, which teased major life changes for Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte since they were last seen in the second Sex and the City film.

Speaking with Emmy magazine (via E! Online), King reveals And Just Like That… could last more than one season. King said the idea for a Sex and the City reboot arrived after he and Parker discussed doing a podcast about the series, but opted to address the present day for the characters rather than the past. Slated for a 10-episode run, And Just Like That… could last more than one season if there are more stories to tell. Here is what King said when asked about the future of Sex and the City:

I don't know. As we were working, it always felt like the beginning. It didn't feel like a beginning, middle and an end. So I think it's possible to keep going—if we have enough good stories.

Speaking on Samantha’s departure from the quartet of friends, King teased Samantha will still be an important part of the storyline and said, "What you know is that Kim Cattrall is not in it. You don't know this: that Samantha is not." Of course, major plot details of And Just Like That… remain under wraps. Slated to debut on HBO Max with a two-part episode on December 9, And Just Like That… continues to keep viewers guessing on Carrie’s love life, how the coronavirus pandemic altered the main protagonists, and how Samantha's absence will be addressed.

Overall, Sex and the City was considered revolutionary for opening up conversations about sexuality, friendship, and female independence. The series developed a devoted fan base that continues to express their desires for the outcomes of the characters in And Just Like That…. For now, it remains to be seen how the new installment of Sex and the City will fare with its audience, and if And Just Like That... will be renewed for season 2. It’ll be interesting to see what will become of Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda in the next installment of Sex and the City.
