On Sex and the City, columnist Carrie raises an interesting question. "If you're a thirtysomething woman living in Manhattan, and you refuse to settle, and you're sexually active, it's inevitable that you'll rack up a certain number of partners." Throughout six seasons none of Carrie's besties bedded more men than Samantha Jones.

Samantha who enjoys sex. If she was a man, she'd be an eligible bachelor, but the same rules don't apply to women. Sam's closest friends have been rendered speechless when it comes to Samantha's no holds barred approach to her sex life. Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte tossed quite a bit of shade Samantha's way when it comes to her sexcapades. Here are 10 times the girls unfairly slut-shamed Samantha.

Carrie Judges Sam For A Sexual Encounter

Kim-Cattrall-Sex-City

When Carrie arrives at Samantha's office on season 5's "Cover Girl," she walks in on Samantha performing oral sex on the Worldwide Express guy. Samantha senses Carrie's disapproval, and it doesn't take long before her suspicions are confirmed. When confronted, Carrie admits it isn't something she'd ever do.

There is a lot that Carrie will do, and Samantha is always willing to offer an opinion or advice, but she never makes her friend feel bad about her choices. Deep down, Samantha regrets her actions, but she's reeling from a recent breakup, and everybody deserves a free pass in the wake of heartache.

The Ladies Pile On Sam After She's Caught In A Compromising Position

After Carrie walks in on Samantha in a compromising position with a delivery guy on season 5's "Cover Girl," she shares the news with the other ladies during one of their many dish sessions. What starts as Miranda asking the group's sexual guru for advice turns into a snarky pile on.

A large part of what makes Sex and the City such a great show are the friendships between these women, but this scene plays out like a middle-aged Mean Girls. Carrie is particularly confrontational. For someone who draws boundaries when she doesn't want to share certain details about her own sex life, she doesn't extend the same courtesy to Samantha.

The Women Question Samantha's Attraction To Another Woman

Samantha begins dating a female artist during season 4. It's a bit premature to out herself as a lesbian after a few dates, but she is taking the relationship seriously - unlike her friends. They have plenty of opinions they share behind Samantha's back.

Charlotte, who tends to be Samantha's harshest critic, comments "I don't think she's [Samantha] a lesbian, I think she just ran out of men." It's okay to be surprised, even a little skeptical when Samantha suddenly outs herself, but straight-up insults with a side of homophobia isn't a very friendly response.

Samantha Comes Under Attack After Sleeping With Charlotte's Brother

NIXON DAVIS CATTRALL PARKER SEX AND THE CITY

When Charlotte's recently divorced brother Wesley comes to town on season 2's "Shortcomings," Charlotte does her best to keep him away from Samantha. Her efforts fail, and she finds Samantha in her apartment after a one night stand with Wesley. For a prim and proper Episcopalian princess, Charlotte often forgets her good breeding. "Is your vagina in the New York City guidebooks? Because it should be, it's the hottest spot in town!"

Throughout the series, Charlotte is never as contemptuous of Miranda's and Carrie's sexual behavior, and regarding her sexual exploits, Charlotte feels she can do no wrong. If she's uncomfortable with a friend sleeping with her brother, she should say so, but she chooses to compare Samantha's private parts to the Statue of Liberty.

Carrie's Comment About Casual Oral Sex

Let's face it, if it wasn't for Samantha, there wouldn't be nearly enough sex in Sex and the City. She's the go-to gal friend who calls attention to serious issues like "funk" semen. Maybe bringing it up over brunch isn't the best timing, but Samantha's right: who do you go to for advice if not your best girlfriends, especially one who's a sex columnist?

The ladies come up short on advice on season 3's "Easy Come, Easy Go," and Carrie questions when "casual head" became a thing again. There's an unlikable frigidity about Carrie at times, and her disaster of a love life has more far-reaching ramifications than Samantha's sex life.

Charlotte Takes Out Her Sexual Frustration On Samantha And ...

Charlotte

When it comes to slut-shaming Samantha, Charlotte is the biggest offender. Charlotte can't manage to engage in coitus with her husband, and she releases all that pent up frustration on her friend on season 3's "Frenemies." Charlotte lectures Samantha that sex is something special between two people who love each other which is a convenient theory now that she's married.

Samantha refuses to apologize for having sex and enjoying it, and Charlotte stops just short of calling Samantha some variation of "slut." Charlotte commits this girl-on-girl crime against Samantha more often than not when discussing sex. Samantha endures a lot of jabs about her sex life, but Charlotte isn't teasing, and she takes it too far.

... Miranda And Carrie Don't Come To Samantha's Defense

Miranda, Carrie, Charlotte, and Samantha in Sex and the City

When Samantha and Charlotte go head to head over the lack of sex in Charlotte's life and the abundance of it in Samantha's, Carrie and Miranda decide not to get involved. But in this case, when Charlotte so clearly crosses a line, they should stand up for Samantha.

After Charlotte's attack, Samantha succinctly and adeptly sums up the Park Avenue princess' problem: she needs to have sex. Not one to have anyone fight her battles for her, all Samantha is looking for from Miranda and Carrie is some backup and possibly a positive affirmation or two.

Carrie Makes A Dig About Samantha Sleeping With Married Men

On season 1's "Bay of Married Pigs" Charlotte and Samantha accompany Carrie to a housewarming party thrown by a guy she's sort of dating: a man desperate to get married. A lone single in a room of boring couples, Samantha gets drunk and begins to point out all the married men in attendance she's slept with. Carrie's response is a not so subtle dig. "Well, maybe we should start tagging your married men and that way you can keep track of them."

Carrie kicks Sam when she's already down, surrounded by sexual conquests she never thought she'd see again. Plus, two seasons later, Carrie has an affair with her ex effectively ending his marriage. Why does she get to claim any moral high ground?

Carrie's Snide Comment

During season 2, Miranda hosts a cute male houseguest who winds up marrying her interior decorator weeks later. It's bad enough Miranda remarks that a proposal is supposed to be forthcoming after a single woman buys an apartment, but it gets worse. After Samantha meets a handsome eligible man, Miranda complains her apartment is lucky for everyone but her. Carrie's response? "What apartment isn't lucky for Samantha?"

Carrie's the writer, the wordsmith, the one who sums up a situation with a clever quip. But comments like this are far too common, and they feel nastier when they're made out of Samantha's earshot. Whether it's meant to be a joke or not, there's something inherently not funny about finding creative ways to call your friend a slut.

Samantha's Sexual Deja Vu

Charlotte Miranda Carrie Samantha Sex and the City

On season 2's "The Chicken Dance," Samantha sleeps with a man she had sex with 15 years prior. Charlotte is, of course, appalled that Samantha can't remember. Carrie has a simple explanation for Samantha's amnesia. "Toto, I don't think we're in single digits anymore."

FYI, by the end of the series, none of the women are in single digits in spite of Carrie having two long term relationships, Miranda getting married and Charlotte being on husband number two. Charlotte is so mortified at the prospect of forgetting the name of someone she's slept with that she keeps a list. So the only difference between Charlotte and Samantha is that Charlotte is more organized.
