Fans have come to love the main characters of Sex and the City, who are shown to have very different personalities from one another. However, their love and support for one another overcome any conflicting personality traits, and their differences make for interesting conversations and storylines.

The six seasons and two movies are filled with snappy banter about life as a woman in New York and the trials and tribulations that this entails. Most of the dialogue is between the four best friends or between each of them with their respective romantic partners, but some of the quotes perfectly summarize the personality of the character who said it.

"The Invitations Are Fancier Than The Dress!" - Anthony Marentino

Anthony stares offscreen in Sex and the City.

Charlotte's friend and confidant, Anthony Marentino, is a character who has strong opinions and he is not afraid to vocalize them. This can make him seem a little harsh and snippy, although he does not intend to hurt other people's feelings. As a wedding planner, Anthony also values grace, elegance, and beauty.

When Anthony sees the simple wedding dress Charlotte has picked for her wedding, his reaction conveys the character's unique personality. He's blunt when he needs to be, but he also wants his friend to look as beautiful as possible. He knows how much importance Charlotte instills in appearances and doesn't want her to be disappointed on the biggest day of her life.

"We All Judge. That's Our Hobby. Some People Do Arts And Crafts. We Judge." - Stanford Blatch

Stanford and Carrie look at someone at a party in Sex and the City

Carrie's friend and ally, Stanford Blatch, is funny and kind. He does not have a huge amount of self-confidence, but he is warm and has a good heart. His and Carrie's friendship often involves gossiping, as well as offering supporting words to one another about the difficulties they are facing in life.

Stanford loves to observe and talk about people, and there's no one else he wants to do this with other than Carrie. In many ways, Carrie's friendship with Stanford is the most stable, and healthiest, relationship she has with a man on the show. Stanford is there for her when she needs him and will indulge in some innocent gossiping to cheer up his friend.

"I'm A Big Pile Of Love Today." - Harry Goldenblatt

Harry looks over while at a table in Sex and the City.

Harry, Charlotte's second husband and the love of her life, is the kindest man she could have hoped to find. Harry loves Charlotte unconditionally but he does so with quiet dignity and self-respect.  Their relationship is so moving and genuine, that it is one of fans' favorite Sex and the City storylines, according to Reddit. The formerly bitter divorce lawyer is transformed by Charlotte into a "big pile of love" who can give the attention and care that his wife needs after her failed first marriage.

"Yeah, You Are, But You're My A**hole." - Steve Brady

Steve attempts to kiss Miranda with foam on his nose in Sex and the City.

On-and-off partner of Miranda, Steve Brady, is not an obvious match for the character. While Miranda is very driven, organized, upfront, and obsessive about work, Steve is laid-back, a little unmotivated, and sometimes a little juvenile. However, these opposite personalities seem to balance each other out and their friendship is at the center of their romance.

While Steve is romantic, he does not have a way with words. He definitely struggles to articulate the way he feels but this is part of Steve's charm. He loves Miranda but the way he expresses it is sometimes crude and crass. He's not a smooth talker like Big; instead, Steve will be blunt and direct, often at the expense of tact.

"I Guess Old Habits Die Hard." - Mr. Big

Mr. Big and Carrie embrace outside in Sex and the City.

John James Preston (known to Carrie and her friends as "Mr. Big") is the biggest love of Carrie's life and the pair do end up eventually marrying. Their relationship is not without its troubles though. He is not always able to articulate his love for Carrie, which is one of the saddest things about Mr. Big. He breaks Carrie's heart numerous times and the pair argue a lot.

When he confesses that he can't break certain behavioral patterns in his life, he's not just talking about superficial things like smoking and working too much. He's also telling Carrie that it's hard for him to change from the emotionally unavailable man that he has become in his time in New York City. The whole series sees the two break up and reunite countless times, making going back to Carrie a pattern of behavior for him. While this does make Mr. Big a sometimes difficult partner for Carrie, fans know that Mr. Big loves no one more than her.

"I've Been Dating Since I Was Fifteen! I'm Exhausted! Where Is He?" - Charlotte York

Charlotte attends a party in Sex and the City.

Charlotte is a die-hard romantic. She spends series after series trying to find Mr. Right and becomes stressed and anxious that she is getting older without being any closer to marriage. This is different from the other women, who seem much more content with their lives without a partner.

When Charlotte expresses her impatience with finding Mr. Right, she reveals two key aspects of her character. The first is her single-minded devotion to becoming a wife and mother. This will lead her to a disastrous first marriage, followed quickly by a successful second union. The second, and most important, aspect is Charlotte's frustration with the dating scene. She can't find the right guy who will fit her image of an ideal man.

"Sometimes, As Much As I Love Brady, Being A Mother Just Isn't Enough. I Miss My Job." - Miranda Hobbes

Miranda talks on phone with Carrie in Sex and the City episode The Real Me.

Miranda is independent, strong-minded, and supportive of those around her. She has a number of different roles in her life: diligent friend, caring mother, devoted wife. Arguably, Miranda is also Sex and the City's funniest character. However, as a workaholic, the most important role for her is being a lawyer. Fans have observed that Miranda's work seems to be where she gets her confidence and self-worth from, which is why it is so valuable to her.

As a direct opposite to Charlotte, Miranda doesn't want her new role as a mother to overshadow her identity as a working woman. She's rightly proud of the work she does, and she isn't afraid to confess that there are times she enjoys that role more than her being a mother.

"I Will Not Be Judged By You Or Society." - Samantha Jones

Samantha Jones looks at someone outside in SEx and the City.

Samantha is one the most likable characters on Sex and the City and very much her own woman. She does not conform to society's expectations and is happy doing what she wants when she wants, regardless of what others expect or want her to be. Samantha and Charlotte are polar opposites in this way, as Samantha would be reluctant to get married or have children despite societal pressures for women to do this.

She refuses to be judged by anyone: her lovers, her friends, and the more expansive (and undefined) "society." Samantha doesn't care what others think is "right" or "wrong." She makes her own decisions about her life, such as dating someone younger than her or moving to the meatpacking district, that others may disapprove of.

Carrie Bradshaw using a payphone in Sex and the City.

Carrie Bradshaw, the main character and narrator of the show, is nothing if not a loyal friend. While she writes about men and dating, her passion is the relationships she has with the women in her life. She is also in love with fashion and living in New York, and romanticizes everything that happens to her.

This quote could not encapsulate Carrie better - it conveys the extreme importance that her friends have in her life (which, really, is what the show is all about) and throws in a metaphor about fashion trends too. The core of the series is about relationships and, in particular, about friendships between these four females. Fashion is fleeting but to this Manthattan columnist, it's the close bonds she has with Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte that will last for a long time.
