Apple TV+'s new series Severance is a brilliantly original premise brought to life with wonderful characters. Interestingly, almost all of the characters are split into two personalities, the ones at work and the ones out in the "real world." This makes the likability of the characters a more complicated situation than in most shows.

Some of the characters are easy to dislike from the beginning as they manipulate and control people. Others are defiant and brave in their actions. And others go through transformative journeys. In the end, some Severance characters are far more likable than others.

Cobel

Harmony looking concerned in Severance.

Immediately as he is introduced, Ms. Cobel comes off as a cold and unnecessarily unpleasant boss at Lumon. While that would be enough for fans to dislike her, she shows a much more disturbing side out in the real world.

Cobel seems to like the power she has over others which drives her to spy on Mark in his daily life as his friendly neighbor. She even infiltrates his loved ones, posing as a nurse to get close to Mark's sister. It solidifies her gross need for control and makes her seem like a very dangerous person.

Milchick

Milchick from Severance reading Ricken's book.

Mr. Milchick is another one of the Lumon employees who is not severed and is very strict about keeping everyone in line. He also puts on a fake persona, pretending to be an overly friendly and welcoming person only to become quite unsettling when they step out of line.

By the end of season one, his smile becomes creepy knowing the sinister man underneath it all. From his psychological torture in the "break room" to his scary treatment of Dylan's young son, Milchick is certainly more of a villain than he lets on.

Ricken

Ricken in the car with Devon in a scene from Severance.

It is hard to say Ricken is unlikable because it seems as though he is a very well-meaning person. He offers advice and love to those around him in a way he likely perceives as being helpful, but he is also very unaware of how obnoxious he is.

Ricken sees himself as some lifestyle guru meant to change the world with his unique views. But this can sometimes make him self-centered, more concerned with being heard than with helping others. But he clearly loves his family even if he is oblivious to how annoyed they are at times.

Dylan

Zach Cherry as Dylan in Severance.

As one of the most accomplished workers in the offer of Macro Data Refinement, Dylan is a very arrogant co-worker to be around. He seems to have little patience for the people he works with and can be quite rude to them at times. He is particularly hostile to the folks at Optics and Design.

However, after learning something about his life on the outside, Dylan becomes a very different person. The small, insignificant perks of the office no longer interest him. While he still doesn't become a nice person per se, he is willing to risk himself in order to help his coworkers get a glimpse at the outside world.

Petey

Petey from Severance in a suit and tie at the office.

The mystery behind Lumon is initially exposed thanks to the drastic measures taken by Petey. He was once the head of MDR only to suddenly disappear one day and reappear in the outside world when he seeks out Mark.

Petey had his severance procedure reversed and then makes it his mission to bring Lumon's lies and wrongdoing to light. Petey is another person who sacrifices a lot to help the people he works with. Ultimately, the character doesn't last too long in the story but he makes an impression as a brave and kind man.

Burt

Burt looking at Irving in Severance.

Despite only existing in the office, the workers at Lumon still discover new things about their office all the time, including the Optics and Design department, run by Burt. Right away, Burt is shown to be a very friendly and sweet man who is more than willing to make some new friends.

Though he doesn't have the same ambition to discover the secrets of Lumon as some of the others, Burt shows a desire to share with the others. His relationship with Irving is especially touching and makes Burt a heartbreaking character just seeking a meaningful connection.

Irving

Irving from Severance in the office wearing a vest and tie.

At first, Irving doesn't seem like an easy person to like. He is a loyal and dedicated employee of Lumon who is very discouraging of any of his coworkers going outside the company policy. However, Irving's arc in Severance's first season shows that he has a deep passion inside wanting to come out.

Through his connection with Burt, Irving finds something other than work to become involved in and this pushes him down a more rebellious path. Seeing him finally stand up to Milchick was one of the most crowd-pleasing moments of the season.

Devon

Though Ricken's support of Mark in the outside world might not be as helpful as Ricken thinks, Mark does have a constant source of support with his sister Devon. She is someone who knows how to communicate with Mark in a way he is comfortable with, showing a very sweet bond between them.

Devon also has her own life to deal with, becoming a new mother, but she always has time to be there for her brother, her husband, and even strangers.

Helly

Helly looking over her cubicle in Severance.

Helly is something of an audience surrogate in the beginning as she is introduced as MDR's new severed employee and needs to become familiar with this strange new existence. But while the others have become compliant with their lives at Lumon to a degree, Helly maintains a rebellious attitude.

It is hard not to cheer for her as she pushes back against the absurdity of it all and refuses to bend. She proves to be quite intelligent with her approaches to breaking out and goes to some extreme measures. Though her "outie" isn't quite as likable, once Helly is on the outside, she seizes the opportunity to bring Lumon down.

Mark

Mark from Severance looking despondent, walking outside in his suit, tie, and jacket.

Mark makes for a wonderful and complex protagonist. As chilling as the existence inside Lumon is, Mark's reasoning is understandable. After suffering a personal tragedy, he seeks to escape and it's easy to sympathize with him. But when exposed to the truth, he doesn't hesitate to do what he can to stop Lumon.

Within the workplace, Mark is more compliant yet shows leadership even in the beginning. He is willing to put himself in trouble in order to help others and seems to genuinely care about these people.
