Severance star Adam Scott discusses Innie Mark’s reaction to seeing his wife’s photo. Apple TV+’s buzzworthy Severance built a lot of its viral value on big secrets and bigger revelations. And no moment was more shattering than Innie Mark’s discovery of the truth about his wife in the finale episode “The We We Are.”

The audience of course knew the truth about Outie Mark’s supposedly dead wife Gemma – that she wasn’t really dead and was living on the severance floor as the wellness counselor Miss Casey – as of episode 7. But Innie Mark didn’t find out the full truth until the highly suspenseful final moments of episode 9, as he and his colleagues Helly and Irving experienced the outside world for the first time thanks to their sneaky commandeering of Lumon’s overtime contingency. Unfortunately that was where the revelations would end, as Milchick nabbed Dylan and canceled the overtime contingency, awakening Outie Mark just as his innie was telling Devon the truth about Gemma.

Outie Mark will no doubt be shocked when at some point in Severance season 2 he learns his wife isn’t dead and is effectively being held captive by Lumon. For his part, Innie Mark was stunned to put the whole truth together as he gazed at his and Gemma's wedding picture during that gripping season 1 finale climax. Speaking to Variety, Scott discussed Innie Mark’s feelings at that moment, and how his discovery of Lumon’s horrifying deception pushed him even farther toward losing all faith in his own reality:

I think for Innie Mark, as much as his view and relationship with this company has changed over the first season, this is a step he never imagined they would take. It all comes crumbling down and seeing this photo is more than he would have ever imagined.

Of course Severance season 1 is in many ways the journey of Innie Mark as he evolves from a naively loyal company man to a skeptical doubter. But his discovery that Lumon apparently faked Gemma’s death, gave her an entire new identity and imprisoned her on the severance floor certainly ups the ante on whatever evils he may have felt the company was hiding. Scott himself has now confirmed that Innie Mark indeed had his whole perception of Lumon shattered in the moment he discovered the picture of him and Gemma at their wedding, and put everything together.

Obviously Severance season 2 will have to delve into the implications of not only Innie Mark’s discovery, but also those made by Helly, whose outie was revealed to be the daughter of Lumon CEO Jame Eagan. Certainly things can’t just reset to where they were throughout most of season 1, when Mark, Helly, Dylan and Irving were buzzing away at their Lumon jobs, occasionally venturing out to make discoveries about baby goats. For their part, Lumon has a very serious crisis management situation on their hands after a trio of their severed workers made it into the outside world and began discovering more than they ever should’ve known about their real lives. But of course Lumon would never simply cancel the severance program, meaning they will no doubt go to great lengths to rewind things back to how they were before Innie Mark made his shattering Severance season 1 finale discovery.
