The first images have been released for Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events season 2, about the unlucky, but plucky Baudelaire orphans and the evil Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) who is out to steal their fortune. The show,  which has already been renewed through season 3, is based on the 13 book series written by Lemony Snicket (real name Daniel Handler). The first season covered the first four books of the series, while season 2 will cover book 5 (The Austere Academy) through 9 (The Carnivorous Carnival).

The first season of A Series of Unfortunate Events saw Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes), and Sunny (Presley Smith) Baudelaire lose their parents in a terrible fire and then get shuffled around to live with various guardians. However, Count Olaf is never far behind, always coming up with a new scheme to get close to the children and the money their parents left them. The orphans have to outsmart him at every turn, while also trying to figure out their parents' mysterious past and how it connects to the fire that killed them.

EW released five new images from A Series of Unfortunate Events season 2. The images introduce two new foes of the Baudelaires. First is Carmelita Spats (Kitana Turnbull), a student who makes the children's lives miserable at Prufrock Preparatory School (in the books she refers to them as "Cakesniffers"). The other new villain of the season is Esmé Squalor (Lucy Punch), who becomes the Baudelaires' guardian in book 6, The Ersatz Elevator. She is obsessed with the finer things in life and later joins Count Olaf to help with his devious schemes. They aren't the only newcomers though. Season 2 will also see the introduction of Nathan Fillion, Tony Hale, Sara Rue, and Roger Bart in undisclosed roles.

These images reveal the series' continued devotion to bringing to life the visually stunning and and over the top world of its source material. There are big hats and brightly colored dresses, but also a sense of foreboding and darkness lurking right around the corner. A Series of Unfortunate Events season 1 balanced this tone extremely well, mixing moments of sadness and loss with intelligent grammar-based jokes and dark humor.

Executive producer and director Barry Sonnenfeld says season 2 of A Series of Unfortunate Events will have, "More action and things are little darker and sadder." The season will pick up right where the last one left off: with the children at a new school and close to meeting (2 of the 3) equally unfortunate Quagmire triplets. Look away while you still can.
