It's rare when a sequel is better than the original movie, and it isn't often when a sequel is just as good as its predecessor either. Unfortunately, more often than not, movies in a series tend to get consecutively worse, and sometimes they don't even understand what made the originals so great.

Tons of Redditors have opinions on which sequels fit into this category. Between a slasher movie that's a sequel in name only, a horror series that focuses on torture porn instead of the mystery, and the Flanderization of an iconic action hero, the sequels totally missed the point.

American Psycho 2 (2002)

Rachael rubs Robert's back in American Psycho 2

Matadinosaurios calls out American Psycho 2, which was largely considered a cheap cash grab at the time and few people even know it exists. The Redditor is "in utter disbelief at how stupid it was and the stain that it represented for the universe." Where the original movie was a satire and a commentary on masculinity, the sequel is nothing more than a schlocky slasher movie.

However, the 2002 movie wasn't always intended to be a sequel to American Psycho. The film was a completely separate screenplay that was worked into the American Psycho world to capitalize on the movie's success. But most viewers felt it didn't work and totally missed the mark.

Dumb And Dumber To (2014)

Harry Dunne (Jeff Daniels) inspecting Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) at the hospital in Dumb and Dumber To

Dumb and Dumber is one of the best '90s comedies, but its legacy has been tarnished a couple of times in the years since. Interestingly, the Redditor doesn't point to the hated prequel, When Harry Met Lloyd, which replaces Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels with unknowns who do terrible impressions of the hilarious comedy actors. Instead, they accuse the proper sequel to the comedy classic, Dumb and Dumber To, of missing the point of what made the original so great.

DJC13 argues that "the first one works so well because it’s two loveable idiots in a world of grounded, realistic people and it has heart." Unfortunately, most agreed that all the sequel's characters are all just as idiotic as the protagonists, and there isn't any heart either, making the movie uncharacteristically unpleasant and mean-spirited.

The Saw Sequels

Saw II Box Trap with Needle

Bklions20 accuses the Saw franchise of going in the completely wrong direction after the success of the original movie. They argue that "the first Saw movie had very little actual violence shown, as it was mostly implied or off-screen."

Where the first movie was more of a crime thriller and had an incredible plot twist, many felt that the sequels turned the series into senseless torture porn, and they were just aiming for as much shock value as possible. The 2021 reboot, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, did at least try to return to the thriller-mystery roots of the original film, but it was regarded as too predictable and didn't land well with audiences.

Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991)

Though the idea of a sequel missing the point of the original movie sounds like a negative thing, according to Tmotytmoty, sometimes it works out for the better. The Redditor thinks that Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey misses the point of Excellent Adventure, but in a good way, and they claim that it's "one of my favorite movies because of how far it stretched its creative capital."

The sequel goes way beyond the time-traveling concept of the original. And while it would have been fascinating to see the Wyld Stallyns pluck more historical figures from the past, the sequel sees them literally go to hell, recruit the Grim Reaper into their band, and fight evil robot versions of themselves. It's ridiculous, but so much fun too.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

Drflanigan explains that "Jack Sparrow in the first three movies was the smartest man in the room," which is true, and even when he came off as dumb, he was only playing dumb. But the Redditor then goes on to say that the same character was "a braindead moron" by Dead Men Tell No Tales.

Jack Sparrow is a great example of Flanderization in movies, which is when a single element of a character's personality becomes their defining characteristic over the course of a series. However, with a new movie on the horizon, a complete redesign of Jack Sparrow is just one of the things fans want from a Pirates of the Caribbean reboot.

Live Free Or Die Hard (2007)

John McClane leaps over a car in Live Free or Die Hard

Though some fans like Die Hard 4, it's often regarded as the first bad movie in the franchise, and Redditor NoahandAllie claims that it's because the movie misunderstands what made the series so great. Where the first movie was simply about a New York cop out of his element when he has to take on terrorists, the fourth movie sees John McClane breezily "jumping off fighter jets and being literally bulletproof."

On top of that, it's almost as if the priority of the Die Hard sequels was to base them in specific locations so that the films can have great titles and taglines. Live Free or Die Hard uses New Hampshire's iconic state motto for its title, and A Good Day To Die Hard is presumably set in Russia just so that it can use the tagline, "Yippee-Kay-Yay Mother Russia."

Sicario: Day Of The Soldado (2018)

Alejandro walking across the desert in Sicario Day of the Soldado

The first Sicario movie was an intense thriller about the war on drugs, revenge, and government malfeasance. Though director Denis Villeneuve has become the best sci-fi director working today, the 2015 movie crime drama is still one of his best. Unfortunately, Day of the Soldado doesn't even feel like it's part of the same universe.

RacksteinsRevenge puts it best by saying that they're "convinced Sicario 2 has to have been an elaborate satire." It's way too chaotic and isn't remotely grounded in reality as the original, and the worst of that comes when Alejandro gets shot in the head, only to be completely fine.

The Land Before Time Sequels

The dinosaurs stare at an erupting volcano in The Land Before Time XIV: Journey Of The Brave

Outside of Pixar's movies, The Land Before Time is one of the most emotional animated films ever made. It's full of wonderful musical numbers, exquisite hand-drawn animation, and a unique depiction of prehistoric times. TheNameless00 puts it best by explaining that it had "a story and characters kids and adults would like."

But the studio was quick to capitalize on the film's success, and that led to almost annual Land Before Time movie releases. The Redditor posits that the follow-up movies were too heavily geared towards children. There were also more musical numbers in the sequels, and many felt that few of them had an emotive story and lacked any kind of moral.

Aliens (1986)

Hicks teaches Ripley how to use a Pulse Rifle in Aliens

Just like with Bill & Ted's Bogus JourneyMacemillion explains that Aliens completely misunderstood what made its predecessor so great, "except it totally worked." Alien is largely regarded as one of the most terrifying and suspenseful horror movies ever made, as it really is just Jaws in space.

However, the sequel, which came seven years later and was directed by James Cameron, is an epic action movie and so much wider in scope. And though it doesn't feature many scares, the 1986 movie perfectly intertwined action and sci-fi in the same way the original did for horror. It's one of the ingenious sequels that completely changed genres.

Ghostbusters: Answer The Call (2016)

Kristen Wiig stars in the 2016 Ghostbusters 2016

Recently, there was an outcry by director Paul Feig, who was outraged when Answer the Call wasn't part of the Ultimate Ghostbusters Gift Set, which includes every other Ghostbusters movie. But part of Sony's choice to not include the film in the bundle might be because of how negatively received it was.

Damnsignins is the first to mention that the film missed the point of the first movie, as the originals are "classics because they were action movies that were funny because the actors took everything happening on screen seriously." Sadly, many felt that isn't the case with the 2016 reboot, and it comes off more like a wacky SNL sketch take on the franchise.
