Sequel To John Woo's 'Hard Boiled' In The Works

One of the most fun, well made, and rewatchable action movies ever made is John Woo's 1992 Hong Kong set Hard Boiled. For those of you who don't know (and if you don't I seriously recommend running out and getting the film to watch - do so and thank me later), the film starred Chow Yun-Fat as Inspector "Tequila" Yuen, a no-messing police officer who spends the entire movie shooting bad guys like bullets were going out of fashion.

Well 17 years down the line, Chow Yun-Fat's production company Lion Rock Entertainment are developing a big-screen sequel to the film. To the best of public knowledge the original director, and action filmmaker extraordinaire, John Woo will not be back for this sequel.

It's reassuring to know that the sequel will see the return of Chow Yun-Fat as Inspector Tequila, not to mention the fact his production company will be handling the film, but a little disheartening to know that the screenwriters who are penning the screenplay are doing so in English for, presumably, English speaking audiences. And it goes without saying that the lack of Mr Woo is disappointing indeed.

For any video game fans out there, you will probably know there was a game made called Strangehold which was effectively a sequel to Hard Boiled. To give us a hint at what direction the movie sequel might go, here is the synopsis for the game:

"Honor is his code. Vengeance is his mission. Bloodshed is his only option..." ... "Ensnared by a crime boss with a gripping secret, Inspector Tequila is forced to cross the line from sworn duty to bloody revenge." ... "Tequila's loyalties to the force are tested when his ex-wife is kidnapped by the Russian mob in Chicago. Tequila struggles to balance his duty to uphold the law with doing what it takes to save his family."

The only reason I am okay with a sequel to the classic Asian action flick is simply because Chow Yun-Fat is involved. If he weren't and it was simply Hollywood doing the sequel in English because, heaven forbid, people had to read subtitles (note sarcasm), then I would certainly be less than okay with it.
