Here's an update on Charles Sobhraj, the real-life villain in The Serpent. The 2021 Netflix show takes place in the mid to late '70s, and explores what motivated the subject to kill at least 12 people across several countries. The Serpent's final credits acknowledge Sobhraj's ongoing legal issues but leaves out information about recent health issues.

Sobhraj is framed as a hippie-hating con artist in The Serpent. Portrayed by Tahar Rahim, the character lives a privileged lifestyle with girlfriend Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Jenna Coleman) and uses his right-hand man, Ajay Chowdhury (Amesh Edireweera), to lure and rob unsuspecting tourists. Sobhraj eventually murders a 21-year-old American named Teresa Knowlton (Alice Englert) and then continues killing to cover up his crimes while simultaneously funding trips to numerous countries. The Serpent plays out like a traditional thriller, with Dutch investigator Herman Knippenberg (Billy Howle) trying to pinpoint the true identity of "Alain Gautier."

The Serpent ends with Sobhraj being released from jail in 1997, only to inexplicably leave France (where he could live as a free man) and return to Kathmandu, Nepal (where he could still be charged with crimes). Sobhraj was detained for a 1975 murder, convicted, and then given a life sentence. In 2014, he was convicted of another 1975 murder and given an additional 20 years. The Serpent reveals that Sobhraj remains imprisoned in Kathmandu as of December 2020, which may leave Netflix audiences wondering about any new developments in 2021. Here's everything we know about the current status of Sobhraj.

Tahar Rahim as Charles Sobhraj in The Serpent on Netflix

Sobhraj is currently 76 years old and remains in jail. According to a recent report (via The Express), he's had several open-heart surgeries and will have at least one more. "The Serpent" or "Bikini Killer" is famous for his past escapes from prison, including a 1986 scheme that involved organizing a jailhouse party for guards, drugging them, and then walking out of the facility. Given the current state of Sobhraj's health, it seems that he's destined to spend the rest of his days in a Kathmandu cell.

Per a 2021 report (via CNN), Sobhraj admitted to killing 12 people. It's been rumored that he murdered even more individuals throughout Southeast Asia and other countries, and possibly may have been involved in the disappearance of the aforementioned Chowdhury, who vanished in 1976 after a confrontation with Sobhraj and Leclerc. The Serpent is fundamentally about its title subject, but it also heavily focuses on Knippenberg - now 76 years old - who remains committed to finding out the whole truth about Sobhraj: "This isn't over for me until he is in a better world, or I am in a better world."
